My son should be arriving in Japan sometime tonight and I was wandering if any of the moms have advise about cell phones in Japan. All I know is they told him to get one when he gets that since his will not work. He also heard that once he gets cell phone we can use an app (viber) to call/text for free. Is this true?

My son was deployed twice on the USS George Washington. He never called me but we chatted on facebook often. Evidently they have wifi access. They can get on the internet with their phone or tablet or laptop. IM is the way to go!
Onealk yes he will need to get a Japan phone. And yes you can use viper to text and call for free as that is what we use. We also skype when mine has time. They will keep your son really busy when he gets there. So don't get discouraged when he doesn't get a hold of you a lot.
Thank you. I will be glad when he gets a cell phone there so we can talk. He skyed this morning, but wasn't very good reception.
what is KIk?
My son arrived in in January. He has a cell phone that he has unlimited minutes to call the states. He can even call our cell phones. We don't call him to expensive from our end. We FaceBook all the time. You can also Skype. We talk all the time. I still have to check into Magic Jack and Vontage.
My son, is in Yokosuka, Japan on the USS George Washington. He calls us and texts us. When he got to Japan he bought a phone and is using a free app. He said that he has a monthly phone. I get a lot of information from this group. I wish i had known that he needed a passport. My son seems to like being in Japan or he is adjusting to being there. He even posted pictures of Japan on fb. I just pray that he will be safe.
My son has been there a little over a year. Cell phone can be bought just be careful of who he get one from.
Let me know if there is anything you may need be happy to help.
Well, the hospital at Yokosuka is large. LOL, I can tell you about the actual patient rooms at the hospital, I've spent some time in them. Your sailor will be in the BEQ (barracks) and will probably have one or two room mates who also work at the hospital. It has been so long since I've been there, and even longer since I had a barracks room of my own, that I don't even know if they are using the same buildings or built new ones (I hope so).

My son lived in the barracks for about 9 months before he was able to move off base. They have a small kitchenette that he will share with a roommate. They also share the bathroom. Each one has there own bedroom with a fridge, desk, bed, dresser and some book shelves. I know my son had a great view. I would post the pic I had but my computer took a dump and I lost them all. He will love Japan I know my son does.
