Knit for the Navy

A group for those who knit or crochet that would like to blanket our sailors with a touch of home. Our goal is to blanket the entire Navy.

Ok, here are the basics. We are asking for handmade blankets/afghans that are twin bed size or smaller. You can knit, crochet, quilt, or make the hand tied (no sew) fleece blankets. (We are open to any other methods as well.) Any pattern or color, that is up to your creativity. Just be sure they are tasteful and appropriate.

After I receive the blanket/afghan, they will be collected and distributed to the ship of the month. Look for pictures of the finished blankets/afghans posted here. Any questions or suggestions can be sent to me or posted on our message board here. Thank you all for your help.

Due to the HUGE cost of shipping blankets, I am very sad to say that I can no longer accept blankets to mail to the ships. I hope that everyone will continue to enjoy the group and come together for friendship and support. Thank you so much everyone who make blankets for our sailors. I know that they appreciated them.

Ken's Mom, I sew but don't quilt very much. Perhaps we could work on one together. If you sent me the fabric you want to use, I could embroider something for the centers of the squares. Add me to your friends page and I'll send you my address.

I have a beautiful embroidery machine. One of the patterns available to me is a group of Navy emblems. One is a white circle that says United States Navy, another is a similar emblem done in blue and finally "Navy" in red, white and blue. If anyone would like something embroidered, let me know. You could send whatever it is to me. I'm not interested in charging fellow Navy Moms or sailors. Just send me enough for return postage, if you can.

Hi Lyn...I also have used the US Navy patterned fleece I bought at WalMart for $9.22 per pattern. I've made 13 and have given them to my son for use on the ship and also to his friends. They are very nice and not overly warm and bulky. I just turned the edges over 1/4 inch and sewed with the zigzag stitch and they finish up in very little time. My 9 month old grandson has one also and loves to cuddle up with it.

Hi All, I'm so glad I've found this group. I just did a blanket for my son to take back to his sub. I also made one for his best friend. I was going to make the double side fleece blanket, but he asked me to only do one layer instead. He said that it is too warm on the subs for two layers. Also, the fringe is a problem, he didn't say why. So I took the fleece and put a binding around the single layer. Before I forget, JoAnn fabrics has a US Navy patterned fleece. My son loved it, even though it didn't have a submarine on it.
