OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of March (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have March ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in March, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

foreverMom I am crying with you right now! Wow, I am torn on whether to go to the airport now! That was so very sweet of you to sympathize with his gf, funny how our experiences in life come back to us later in life!

OMG it IS March I considered driving too, it would be about 15 hrs for me, at first H said he wanted me to fly, then he said it was whatever I wanted to do...bleh, guess I'll decide closer to, and see what gas prices/airline prices do

Comment by Navy Wife Ginnibean on March 9, 2011 at 1:45pm: awe valtameri being drawn to a specific dog means a lot, I could go on and on about the funny stories of this, you will find some differences but honestly unlike male/female cats, our experience with dogs has more to do with their individual personalities rather than their gender!! Feel free to share the fun puppy stories that are coming! Our poor K9 kids, we all move Friday and they will have a new K9 roomie, and then their "daddy" leaves Monday lol, hopefully SO much chaos and some spoiling from their grandma will keep them distracted and excited rather than on edge due to all the change. lol...I see a Three Dog Bakery trip in our near future...

I am so glad you brought up comparing airports Kathy I was considering buying myself southwest gift cards so I'll have the airplane money "saved" where I can't get to it, however I don't think southwest flies to all those airports!! I'll hold off and do my research! Thank you!!

OMG it IS March I have been stressing some too, thankfully by the time I buy tickets I should have our BAH (Basic Housing Allowance) and that will help, however until then, just to be sure of no surprises or delays in his pay I'm cutting back on things and not doing much while he is gone.

Comment by OMG hes a Sailor (div180) on March 9, 2011 at 1:33pm: we are driveing 14hrs ugg. there is 7 of us. me,my hubby, 4 kids and the GF. not looking forward to that drive. I have looked and seems the best deal with be to the a room at the Ramada that has 3 queen beds for $125 a night.

I want so bad to go but I am so stressing about the money, I want it to be a happy weekend but I know it is going to so hard to work out the cost of the trip......

Losing a companion like that is so difficult, my heart broke for you when I first read about it when you told us (having been through an awful loss). We have labs, and the two we have now are rather attached to us, one to me one to my husband, I'm concerned what that will do to her when he leaves any pet parent advice? When he goes out of town for work now, it usually takes her three days to come around to me, first night she waits for him, second & third night she acts like she is mad at me that he is gone.

Son has been away so many times, this is just so different. I tracked the plane last night and when I knew he was in the air, thats when I really lost it. Cried for hours like a baby. It felt so final.

Thanks for posting, I feel like I am normal now, and everyone should read what Kathy wrote a few down from this.

Comment by Navy Wife Ginnibean on March 9, 2011 at 11:47am: we had our 7-day last night and things are so real now...I must have had this look of exhaustion/stress/worry on my face all the recruiters kept asking me "you doing ok?" Thank goodness most of it is actually stemming from allergies and midterms lol...I'm so glad that I get to take H to the recruiting station later than originally thought on Monday and then the moms and I will get to go to MEPS the next day, I'm banking on one of the moms to break first so I am excused to cry. I don't think I want to go to the airport though, did any of you go?

a bit of advice about the cell phones, the Chief told us they were getting to keep them now (the Air Force does this too) to make calls but that they wouldn't get to charge them while at BC so have your SRs charge them while they are at the airport, or at MEPS, any chance they get, but sending a calling card is a good idea. We also had a hard time finding them, at target, they are with the books. I thought that was odd.

Comment by nicksmum on March 9, 2011 at 11:36am: well my son left for meps yesterday, called last night and said he is not sure he is flying out today. havent heard from him this morning. we did buy him a calling card on monday night, he looked so confused on how to use it, even after I explained it to him. lord help him! I didnt go to the recruiting office with him, had to have my hubby take him. I think my son was glad I didnt go, he hugged me tight and said goodbye and I cried for a good 2 hours, then husband got home and we both cried like babies. in fact I am teary now just typing this. wish i knew if he was leaving today or if I can drive down to san diego and have lunch with him. of course then how would I drive home with tears in my eyes?

Comment by Cannonpark03/Div 152 PIR 4/29/11 on March 9, 2011 at 11:29am: We had a really difficult time finding a calling card...I hopped on the chat forum and asked where to get them, as we could not find them at wal-mart, RiteAid or target. The ladies suggested checking grocery stores that might have a different selection and Cosco and the CVS's, Walgreens etc. We finally found two to choose from at CVS. I think the phone card is becoming a thing of the past! Also, I was told in the chat forum that they have phone cards at GL available for purchase!! I hope this is a comfort to those who sent someone on without a phone card!!

I was thinking I don't know how someone who has lost a child can get through it. I am barely hanging on here as it is! Hugs to you all! Thanks for all the support and understanding! <3
