OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of March (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have March ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in March, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Does anyone know whether it is possible to change the guests for PIR if there is a last minute change in one of the guests availability for the date? My son had already decided to list his girlfriend as a guest along with me, my husband and our very close family friend. But, his girlfriend may not be able to take the time off from school to attend and my son's Godmother would love to take her place if she doesn't go. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Comment by Navy Wife Ginnibean on March 2, 2011 at 3:11pm: OMG it IS March I actually hope for everyone's sake they do change their minds, after all that has happened, and about to happen, I'm not sure that is such a good foundation for a marriage. Especially since both their lives as they know it are about to change drastically, and your son may become someone quite different. Not bad, but someone she isn't quite use to. This will be very hard for a new bride to try to figure out. What about all the living alone? Will she be able to handle that?

Sadly I hear SOOOOO many people find a "boot camp crush" and marry them, for all the wrong reasons, benefits, to live off base, because they just knooooooow this is the one. I didn't believe it until I saw it happen. I about died when on one of my trips to Lackland AFB the little shady motel RIGHT off base had directions and info on obtaining a marriage license right next to the check in! It happens so much that at graduation back in May of last year there were instructions to family and friends letting them know they were not to get married graduation weekend, however it happened, and happened a lot.

I know that the experience of boot camp can put things in a different perspective and possibly make some young men and women decide to take that big step in getting married to whom ever they have left back home, and that can be good and bad. There is A LOT going on in their lives, in their NEW life. Marriage is hard enough, I think you all will agree.

Comment by Chimelle 3/149 on March 2, 2011 at 2:43pm: Well, it's done! We got to MEPS this morning, pretty early so we would be sure to not miss him swearing in. There was a large group of Army kids swearing in, then B came around the corner-he had some other paperwork they needed to do. When we got that done we found out he was the only Navy shipper today, so we had our own private swearing in ceremony! We walked into the room (which is quite nice and official looking) and he was already there, standing at attention. As we came around to face him, we saw he was all smiles (and fidgety from excitement)! The lady who swore him in said she had been the same way and encouraged him to NOT smile at BC like that because she did lots of extra push ups for it. :0) He tried to not smile but he just couldn't contain himself. It was exciting for me and the rest of the family to be there. I did not cry one tear today. So far. He was so happy and we're happy for him. I know this is what he was meant to do and seeing him ready for it was great. I know the coming days will not always find me this encouraged, but today was good!

I'm hoping it went as well for all you other moms today! And ITSN 2BE-go get 'em!

OMG it IS March wow a wedding in your sites, that is exciting yet nerve wracking at the same time I imagine? You will have to keep me/us updated on this!!

Comment by Valtameri on March 2, 2011 at 10:18am: I appreciate the reminders that are sent. I do wonder about the swimming hints, because I keep reading different things. One sailor told me that they have the recruits "swim to the end of the pool and back" which, unless RTC has a very large pool, isn't 500 yards, maybe like 50. I also read that it is a prone float that they have to do (face in water), not supine (on back). Guess my son will find out soon!
