Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of March (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have March ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in March, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

chanwife1, many people have a send off party of some sort--some call it an "Anchors Aweigh" party. It is a great way to let your future Sailor know that he is loved and supported. Loved ones can write notes at the party that you will later mail to him and it is a good time to let them know about N4M. Some give blue candles as a favor and just knowing that those candles will be lit during BC and especially during BST helps some. If you are unfamiliar with the blue candle tradition, check out Blue Candles. (Check your My Page.)

Read the pages 1 or 2 a day and go back to them as you need them, especially those in Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones).

Thanks lemonelephant, it's a bit overwhelming (all these pages) but hopefully it'll make going a bit easier

It's not too early to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for..., and to start discussing some of the things there with your future Sailor.

If you have not yet joined Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones), now is a good time to do so and to begin checking out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) starting with OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes to Your Profile) (some of you have changes that you need to make--at least change 3) and Arrival and What Happens at the RTC.

yes, hulawithjen, the Quizlet app went over well with my son... anything he can do on his phone will make it more likely for him to use. thanks for the tip :)

hulawithjen, Thanks for the Quizlet tip! After 4 years of ROTC he still forgot a few things! and lots of support and hugs to all us moms with sons and daughters leaving for the first time! I know I will need it.

Comment by lemonelephant on February 10, 2014 at 2:04am

hulawithjen, actually he will be an HM, but I can understand why you wrote HC instead since he has a contract for Hospital Corpsman.

Thank u for the comforting words of wisdom, J's Mom! I know it must be just as hard to watch your 2nd baby leave for BC as it was with your 1st baby :-( but now you can be twice as proud too!!

Becab2, you are a such strong wife & mommy to be able to do this for yourself & your family!! When things get rough at BC, just picture your husband & kids at the end of that finish line waiting there for you with big proud smiles on their faces :-)

By the way, to answer your question, my boy will be an HC & he will attend A school training in Texas

Defoe's Mom, J's Mom is right, I don't think one could ever be fully prepared for their kids to leave for bootcamp :-( Don't feel guilty... We can only do the best we can & then we'll have to let them take it the rest of the way...

At the last Dep meeting, I shared with some of the recruits something I stumbled upon while looking up Navy info. If any of you or your kids have a smart phone, you can download a free app called: "Quizlet" It is a very helpful studying tool that offers flashcards, & testing on info they need to have memorized such as:
Sailors Creed, 11 General Orders, Navy Chain of Command, Ranks & Recognition (with pictures even!) Military time & alphabet, etc... This helps eliminate having to lug around bulky folders & pieces of paper & flash cards & it is so easy to just whip out your phone to study if you have any down time :-)

Defoe's mom, I've also taken the initiative to spot-quiz my boy at least once or twice a day to see if he's studying. I'd ask him to recite any of the items listed above during car rides, while waiting for our order to eat, in the elevator, etc :-) that might be something helpful you can do to help prep your boy :-)

My son is leaving from Columbia, SC on March 11th and I'm getting very nervous. We still have so much to do before he leaves. It seems my job is consuming me and I'm not able to help my son prepare as I should so I'm feeling guilty and overwhelmed!
