Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of May (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have May ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in May, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Sailorwifeschu,

Welcome to the group of us who have son/daughter/spouse in this week's group of arrivals!

Hubby arrive at GL this morning. Now the countdown begins to PIR, whenever that may be.

MN Sunshine,

Be careful not to send bulky envelopes.  Best not to draw any attention to your Recruit.  I've heard conflicting advice about whether or not newspaper clippings are allowed.  If you copy the articles or photos onto the bond paper of the printed letter, that seems to be more acceptable.  Again, some [what do you call the guys in charge?] are more lenient than others.  I am not going to take any chances.  I don't think they get much free time to read fun stuff - they're supposed to stay focused and not be distracted during Boot Camp.

Capricorna,

On Thursdays I'm planning to send some sort of clipping from our weekly newspaper.

My son loves the movies.  I plan to send him reviews so he can stay up on something he loves and can maybe pick one to see if and when he has time.

As I run into things around the house that remind me of him, I'm sharing it with him.  He used to use playing cards to mark his place in a book.  I keep finding them everywhere.  I have a staff of his soda in the refrigerator.  I smiled when I saw it today (nobody looks in the vegetable drawer except me.)

I need to look for some pictures.

I'm looking for ideas too.  Please share.

Ronet, I had a party for my son just 2 weeks ago.  Three things I'm glad I did are as follows:

I created a guesbook where I could collect names addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses and a place where friends and family could write messages.  I used a 8 x 8 scrapbook -- it later turned into a scrapbook of the event.  I've already needed some of the information I collected.

I had blank note cards available for friends and family to write words of encouragement.  I will send them to him while he is in basic.

I contacted our American Legion.  They brought flags, information, "official support" (we live in a small town), and an application to join the Legion.  My son joined on the spot (they're holding the application until he's fulfilled his first six months).

The one thing I wish I did was assign someone else to take photos.  As a result we got very few shots.  (I was smart enough to have asked someone to monitor the food.)

Good luck with your party.  The last couple of weeks just fly by.

MNSunshine - all great ideas!  Thanks!  I saw some cards specifically for the military (with thanks and we support you sayings).  I need to go get some of those as well as some generic cards with "Hang in there" or loving messages.  I know there is a group on N4M for volunteers who write to Recruits and Sailors who don't get mail otherwise.  I bet they would have advice, suggestions, ideas to share.  I open a new document each day at work and add a few lines as I get through the day.  By the end of the day, I have a letter done.  I email it to myself so I have a copy.  I'm looking forward to getting the address, joining the Div/Ship and making plans for PIR.

My dauaghter leaves  may 23.  We are having her a party this weekend.   My husband who is a Retired Marine insisted on going with the Navy Colors-Blue and Gold.  I am using a white linen tablecloth for the cake(which has Navy logo) blue and yellow napkins , 2 small Navy flags and 2 US flags  in stands on each side of the cake, Behind the cake I have found a metal blue anchor with gold beads wrapped aroung the anchor , The anchor is on a stand and will be perfect behind the cake ,  The anchor was only $ 11.99.

I also purchase a medium Navy flag to hang up.  i bought from the dollar store balloon weights that are blue and  have blue stars which will be  placed on yellow tablecloths.   Will  post photos on Monday.

Is there a group for this?  Maybe there should be ...

I'm planning to include things like ...

the weather here and the weather there

what everyone in the family is up to -- even though it's boring -- I think he will like to hear it.

what I'm making for dinner and what I'm baking

I'm also looking for good quotes and things that make me think.

Cards --

I went to Hallmark and bought some dollar cards with positive, loving messages.  I figured if I really got stuck I'd send a card.
