Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of September (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have September ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in September, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Usually the recruit doesn't know the flight time until s/he is given his/her file and put on the bus/train to the airport. They don't plan these things ahead of time. They don't always know how many will actually leave until about 9 a.m., frequently recruits can't go because of a last minute illness, injury, fail a final physical, etc. Whatever afternoon flight is available as of that morning, that's the flight the recruits take.

The Navy has an agreement with the airlines. MEPS calls that morning to say "we have x recruits going to X location. They are assigned a flight and go.

Thanks Arwen. Good info to know. Hopefully we'll know the flight time before that day. We'll just leave it open in any event.

Recruits are usually assigned to flights that leave at around 2 or 3 p.m., but can be as late as 6 or 7 p.m.

For a detailed explanation of what happens when a recruit reports for duty, see the discussion "FAQ: What will happen when my new recruit reports for duty" in the discussion forum just above these posts. There is also an FAQ about pay.

Arwen: THANK YOU!! As I'm a teacher, I'll need to take time off and this helps in all the planning.

Do you have any idea of when the flights usually happen? That day - late afternoon, evening....?

I will stop by the recruiter's office and make sure I get all the details he knows then.

Again, thanks much. ~Diana

Aubrey's Mom - The "swearing in" she did when she signed up was simply a pledge to be in DEP and report for duty at a later date. The official, binding swearing-in will happen between 10-11 a.m. at MEPS on her ship-date.

1) if her ship-date is the 28th, she will report to the recruiter's office on the 27th, and stay the night at a hotel in San Diego.

2) if you want to see her official swearing-in, you can be there. Go to MEPS at about 9 a.m., and you can wait in a family waiting area. They will call you when it's time for the ceremony, and bring you to the room where it will happen.

3) you can ask the recruiter if you can drive her to San Diego. *Sometimes* it is allowed. You can stay at the same hotel where she will be, but you will have to get your own room. If you want to, you can also meet her at the airport and wait with her until her flight time.

4) don't be afraid to ask her recruiter anything. They are supposed to be there to serve new Navy parents as well as their recruits.

@Ty'smom.....glad to hear your son is safely on the next leg of his journey. Hugs and prayers to you these next couple of months. It will go fast and soon, you'll see him - in all his uniformed glory - a new man :-)

My son called his dad this morning at around 5 and said he made it to GL.  Bootcamp has officially started for our family.  I will be praying for each one of you mothers on here that is right there with me.  I'll be praying for those that are soon to be leaving too.  God bless you all and have a great holiday weekend!

@Diana: No, I don't think that is silly at all. I would do the same thing....a warm reminder he (in my case she) is alive and well - just not right there at the moment.

As for attending the swearing in: Didn't that happen when they initially signed up? There is another swearing in?  When my daughter signed up, she did it on her own (back in Feb) and didn't really tell us what and when things were happening. I'm not sure she really understood it all. And even now, I seem to know more about how all this bootcamp goes then she does. Either she isn't asking the right questions at the DEP meetings or they really don't tell them much by way of those details.

Soooo, here are MY questions for you ladies who recently went through this:

1. If ship date is, say Sept . 28 (which my daughter's is), does she physically leave for GL THAT day? Does she head for San Diego (where they go from here in CA, we live 2 hrs away) the night BEFORE the 28th or ON the 28th ....or is all that a mystery?

2. If she does swear in again before shipping to GL, will there be some kind of notice?

3. Can I go to San D wth her or at least follow down if her recruiter takes her?

4. Could I just corner her recruiter and ask him myself? (or are inquisitive, bossy mommies not encouraged to intervene.....? lol)

Thanks all. We are at 25 days away now and my daughter is still cavorting up the coast - headed to Humbolt State to visit college buddies up there. I do hope she makes it home by next weekend where we have 75+ people showing up to say goodbye, good luck, cya when you come home to visit..... :-/

I can't tell everyone how much it means to me to be able to come on here and vent and share with others who are going through the same thing.  My son left on Thursday for BC and I haven't put his clothes away that he left on his bed.  It just seems better to leave them out. Anyone think that's silly?
