Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of September (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have September ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in September, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

They do take them away temporarily while they are in MEPS, but they give them back before sending them to the airport. MEPS/the recruiter has no way to return the phones to the families.

All I know is what my recruit told me.  I asked him to call me when he was on the bus to GL & he said he can't cause they told him they would be taking their cell phones this morning.

My son had long waits at the airports on his way to boot camp, so we talked almost the entire time he was at those airports - 3 hours in Portland, Oregon, and more than 2 hours in Chicago. They don't make them turn off the phone until they're getting on the bus in Chicago.

Sorry, first time was from the airport and then second time from the base, both times on his cell.  It was sooo good to hear from him!

Your right Arwen, my son called me last night from his cell phone and then again from the base for his "I'm here" call.  I believe that is why I got to talk to him twice and also, I believe, a little bit longer.

Unless things have changed in the last 6 months, recruits can continue to use cell phones at the airports, and keep them until they pack their box to send home in boot camp. The Navy finds it convenient to allow recruits to make the "I'm here" call on their cell phone. There just aren't enough pay phones to go around, to cycle all of the recruits through the phone bank in the time they have.

Bandito's Mom, I will also be praying for you and your family.

Last night was difficult for me.  My son called for the last time before he leaves for BC.  His CO's will be taking their cell phones this morning and they will be sworn in tonight and then go to GL later this evening.  Should be there late tonight.  He will make his "I'm here" phone call to his dad (yes, we are a divorced family).  So I won't here from again until a letter arrives or the "I'm still alive" call in about 3 weeks.  I'm already missing him.  I know he will do great as all our recruits will, it's just hard knowing this is going to be a tough journey for them.  God bless all of you this weekend and if your child still hasn't left yet, I pray that you will all have cherished time with them before they leave.

If bought a 600 minute one at Target. AT & T. Normally $30 got it on sale for $20...had forgotten all about it and had wandered down the aisle when shopping for him before he left. Praise Him for taking care of the "details"!

Bandito's Mom - I am very sorry for all that your going through right now!  My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Jacketfan - I did receive my son's call last night.  Actually, he called twice.  Once from the airport,  apparantly, they were told that if they had cell phones they could make a quick call before they left the airport.  The second one was like a minute long maybe, the "I'm here, box should come shortly and I should be able to write within a week or two" call.

Wow, what a month.  Maybe it is all about putting everything in perspective, or seeing just how strong SR's resolve is. Started with DIL's grandpa getting sick, diagnosed with Pneumonia and inoperable Cancer, came home and passed immediately.  Then this week SR uncle had heart attack went to hospital, had Angioplasty, and as of today is home.  Last night grandpa (uncle's dad) had a bleeding episode (history of divertiiculitis) and is still in the hospital.  Son had taken a quick vacay with his wife, so he isn't even here to visit hospital, and his family farewell party is Friday nite.  Now, not sure who will be here and who wont.  .....  We already had conversations about whether he wants to know if anything happens while he is in Bootcamp.  But all of this now makes those decisions very real.  Previously, he said he wanted to not be told until after BC.  I will check with him again to see if this is what he still wants.  However I will NOT have this conversation in front of the rest of the Fam..... Really Really tired and stressed, hoping we pull it all together for his Farewell dinner tomorrow.  I may just have to leave work early
