My son leaves for bc on Sept. 15th and I'm having his party on the 10th - the weekend before he leaves.  We're having it at his firehouse (he's a volunteer fireman) so we didn't have to pay that much for the room.  We're having about 75 people and he wants wings and pizza.  There's so much more planning I have to do.

jacketfan, good idea about the small gathering right before he leaves.  We did a small family dinner directly before my son left and he really enjoyed that.  

I found that another place to get some nice (and inexpensive) decorations is the Dollar Tree.

I saw on here somewhere that the big party shouldn't be just before they leave because they will not sleep for a really long time and they will be too tired.  We wanted to have a big party, but since he's just out of high school, all his friends leave for college at various times throughout August and we'd have to do it at the end of July.  So he wants to just do a family get together with just a few of his closest friends, so we are going to do ours the Saturday before Labor Day in the backyard.  That way he can spend Labor Day (he leaves the morning after) relaxing, packing, etc.  Money is really tight right now, since my husband is still in school, so I was thinking just hot dogs on the grill.  The point is that we are all together.  I'd still like to decorate, though, just a little.  Lots of 4th of July decorations out there; I saw some nice ones at Hobby Lobby and Party City (if you have these in your area).  I have someone that is going to make a cake with the Navy emblem on it.  Of course, at some point, we have to play Village People's "In The Navy"!

Just realizing that I should start planning a farewell party.   I had a family bar-b-q when he went away to college, which he dropped out of.  He just had a pretty big wedding.  So, I think we just do a back yard event on Labor Day.  What is everyone else doing?

Good Morning, Ladies.  I'm Betsy and my son graduated from BC in Dec. 2010. He is now a sailor and in Pensacola in A school.  I would love to help with any questions you might have.  There are a few of us "veteran" moms on here so you won't feel lost. 

I would say that the most important thing to stress with your depper is the need to run and work out A LOT.  No matter how much they (or you) think they are in shape, running more and working out, will really help them a lot.  If by chance, they happen to have work boots, have them practice running in those too.  A lot of kids have never worn boots like that and some have problems with blisters once they get to bootcamp.  If they condition their feet ahead of time, it could help.  

For you, who love them, encourage and tell them frequently how proud you are of them.  Some of them may tell you that you don't need to write to them everyday. Don't listen to them.  My son told me that and on one of his phone calls, he told me "Mom, you were right (words I cherish now, lol) I really miss you and you can write me as much.  We look forward to every letter and can't wait until they call mail call."  They will look forward to and cherish every single letter and card that they receive.  If your depper takes a bible or small prayer book with them to BC, before they leave, try to put little notes of love or encouragement randomly in the pages for them to find while they are there.  Make sure that they have all loved one's addresses together in their wallet before they go.  Laminating the addresses is a good idea too, since who knows what will happen once they leave you. I would also laminate any pictures that they will take to preserve them.

My boyfriend leaves Sept 1....I think this is going to be the longest 2 months...of our lives.

My daughter signed up last July to be a Nuke as well and ended up with a September date....almost 14 months as a depper. Then once she gets to A school, she'll have a couple of weeks before she "classes up", T-Track inbetween the 3 schools....I can't even imagine the nightmare that it must be to coordinate all these recruits.

I am curious, how many people start boot camp in a given week.  Must be lots and they have them weekly.  So far there are are only 3 Moms that have kids for Sep 6.  Do they have a giant mix of every grade and keep filling it up until very close to departure?  My son signed up in Jan, he is going into the Nuke program, so that may have something to do with how long we have known when he leaves

My son leaves Sept. 6, also a corpsman. Leaving from the East Coast, though.

My son is leaving for boot camp on Sept. 2nd.  Anyone else leaving then?
