Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of September (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have September ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in September, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

My son leaves on the 14th, but for me it's like he's already gone. He flew back home to his dad's house in Baltimore on Aug 22nd so that was my good-bye. The only positive is I've still been able to talk with him. I did send him my first "practice" letter to his dad's house today. I sent him a calling card (activated) and two books of stamps....just doing what I can to make sure he's prepared.

To all you moms out there that have already said the real good-byes - my thoughts and prayers are with you! Just think, they'll be graduating before you know it!

Proudmom - my son left yesterday for bootcamp - flying to Chicago from Jacksonville, FL. I got a little teary eyed after he was sworn in and right before we left MEPS, but the REAL gut wrencher was when I got to thinking about how he was the ONLY Navy recruit flying from Jacksonville - and he's only flown once in his entire life - when he was a little boy!

I'm sure there will be more weepy moments to come, but we have to keep our eyes on the "prize" ... graduation!

When did/does your child ship out?

Hint: If your DEP does not have a bank account, please open one right away so he/she can bring the debit card to boot camp with them. Yes, they can open a Navy Fed CU acct when they arrive, but it's good to have an account at your local bank or credit union so you can access it too! The cost for Navy portraits can only be paid by check, debit or credit card - and most young people never order checks! The NEX will accept cash, but recruits should never bring that much cash with them to boot camp!

Also, read up on Grad & Go information and discuss this with your DEP before they leave (link in discussion above).

Thanks Jessica-B for all the great info. I had planned on the calling cards, but didn't think about the stamps. I will have to mail them to his dad's house this week to make sure he gets them before he leaves for BC.

Regarding the running - he is a soccer player so has apprently impressed his recruiter with the times. His problem will be the eating! The boy is a bottomless pit! lol I will make sure he knows to eat what he can before he gets to BC but to keep it to 3 squares and make sure it's good food, not junk.

One quick question....when they leave (or arrive) at BC is there an official swearing in that is more official than when they actually signed the papers? And if so, is there a way to get pictures or a video of that since I won't be able to be there?
Comment by Diana PIR 11/12/10 on August 29, 2010 at 9:09am
Well I finally got some news from my son about the letter and call. He said that i will get both! Woo hoo!!! With his dad's travel schedule he won't know if his dad will be around to receive either of them and since the letter has important information he'll send it to me. Sounds silly I know, but a huge load off my mind.

I also have exchanged my cell number with is best friend and his GF so they can keep up to date with me. It's getting close

All I can say is WOW! I've only just started being part of this group and wish I had learned about it back in February when my son actually enlisted. This is such a great group of women and I for one amd looking forward to finding my PIR group once I finally find out when it is!

Someone posted earlier about FB friending as well, if anyone is interested, shoot me an email!

Angie- so glad you added that. I never even thought that it could be a problem when some moms see that ship on the form letter.
I am certainly glad they are there. They help so many recruits as they get back to health and get them built back up.
Here's to hoping none of these recruits will have to be in that part of ship 6.
I would love to hear great stories as yes some of your recruits will be in ship/div and PIR with my son.

@ryansmominarizona, Thanks for adding me! Diego aka Kyle leaves MI. on 21 September for Great Lakes. He is all set to go, he has everything done and is ready through the recruiting office. There has been changes at the recruiting office in the past two months and the guys he has worked with for many months are no longer there. There are two females now and they have no idea what is going on. I am hoping these last three weeks go smoooth not only for our son, but for the other people who are DEPpers through this office. My son's friend's name is Ryan and he left for BC 18 August. They are one month apart, hoping they will be able to see each other somewhere along the line.

@okeemom - you asked when the recruits would have time to go pick up their portraits. They actually visit the NEX more than we realize, and they are given time to take care of this.

I was actually quite shocked that they won't do a payroll deduction for the photos. Many seasoned moms had told me this could be done, but like I said, I talked to two different clerks at the photo lab on two different days and both said no.

Yes - you can call the photo lab, but they prefer you only call them when necessary. Try not to mention this website, as they are not our biggest fan. Moms' tend to quote things from here instead of letting the lab employees give them the answer!

There are many new sailors who have the photos shipped home if their family is not coming to PIR. Our son was a Grad & Go, so he ran back to his barracks after PIR to get them for us.

We almost LOST them at the airport on our flight home. It's a very large flat white package (like a plain flat FedEx envelope) and it wouldn't fit in our carry-on bag (did not bring checked luggage). While grabbing a coffee in the terminal, we set it down and walked away. You should of seen me jump - I screamed "Oh Sh#@" and everyone turned around. I ran back to that stand and there it was! The envelope is white and blended with the wall. I'm lucky airport security didn't apprehend it thinking it was something dangerous! So, I did something rather smart for a change and wrote our name and cell & home phone number on the envelope - and wrote "Navy Portraits" on it too! If I lost it again, maybe someone would call me.
