Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of September (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have September ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in September, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Now I am sure somethings will crop up when my son leaves and I will again be a bit crazy but for the most part, they light will be on, and I will not be trying to find my way in the dark. Ladies all I can say is when you get your form letters, find your PIR group. This will be your lifeline. You will go through so much with these families in 8 weeks and come to think of them as family.

well yes I am also however she is in ship 6 now and that is sort of sad. She says in everyletter now that she is going to see us soon and be on her way to the Airport with us by her side, she had/has been fighting a horrible infection and was also having issues with her run. Now we all think that it was pretty much tied together. So after some minor surgery, and lots and lots of antibiotic, she is feeling better than when she started BC. Thank You Jesus.

I left my phone upstairs since I was not expecting a call, not at that time of the morning and she called my phone 3 times and then had to call her dad. He called home and got my v-mail also so he called my son, who was sleeping in the l-rrom. Ask him where the heck I was and I was just in the d-room. I of course was crying all day at that point since that was the bad call. Now again the phone does not leave my side. However now the calls are on Sat and they are for the most part great upbeat calls.

A lot of dental work is done in the first few days, many of my daughters div had wisdoms out. some just had some fillings. My dirl had already had 2 out and the other 2 looked alright for right now. They check everything, they looked at her root canal and said it looked ok at first and now she says they think it is bad. Not sure how you fix a root canal. She also had some fillings way into BC like what should have been the day before her PIR, I am sure they figured that since she would still be there they had time to do this.
For the most part I would not worry about the wisdoms. They will look and decide what and when is best to have something done.
Remember the first week is a crazy week for them, they are seeing Dr.s and getting shots and getting uniforms issued and being yelled at as well as they really do start learning things from the moment they get there.

Don't forget to give your recruit phone call instructions, at least for boot camp. Really! I posted this on the Boot Camp Moms Group, but it was suggested I share it with DEPpers as well.

This suggestion is for phone calls home you might wish to pass on to your recruit. I wish I had told this to my son before boot camp, but I didn't think of it then, of course. Tell your recruit that if they get your voicemail on your cell, wait a couple of minutes and then try again. Sometimes you just might not get to your phone fast enough, and you can't call them back.

I missed 3 phone calls from my son to my cell phone by mere seconds, once in a noisy restaurant and another time because I couldn't find my phone fast enough after it sunk to the bottom of my purse under all kinds of other stuff. (I am embarrassed to admit that the other time it was because I apparently changed my ring tone and didn't realize that it was my phone ringing until it was too late. Boy, did I feel dumb, and heartbroken that I missed his first call home!) Even though I had my phone right next to me about 90% of the time, he managed to find that little window of time to call when I would miss the call.

This suggestion worked this morning when he called as I was driving in to the parking lot at work with the radio blaring, because who would have thought that he would call me at 6 a.m. Chicago time? Not me. Go figure.

I am not 100% positive but in my daughters case, she went to the NEX before they had PIR and paid for them. Hers were being sent home so she had no choice as she was staying longer than the rest. Maybe that is how they do it.

Thanks for the info on the portraits. I will tell my son, otherwise he probably wouldn't get them. He doesn't always think of stuff like this. I am still really nervous but am glad he made the decision to joining the Navy. I have never been apart from him for more then a week, it will be hard to not hear from him every day. But I am sure I will manage, everyone else does.

Sobe..my question is when will the recruits have the time to go pay for their pictures?? Do they do it on Sunday when they are getting their personal chores done? My son is leaving the 20th so this is about the last thing we need to discuss. He will be opening an account at the Navy Bank so I am guessing he will be given a debit card from there.

Here are the packages, prices and important things to know about Navy Portraits as of 8/26/10:
Your recruits picture will be taken in their Navy Blue uniform and these are very nice, professional portraits.

No order form is sent to the families, it's up to the recruit to decide to order them or not, and how many.

These are taken around week 4 or 5, they are ready and available for the recruit to pick up the last week of boot camp.

They must be paid for with a debit or credit card, or personal check (cash okay - but they should never have that much cash with them at boot camp!). They cannot have the cost taken out of their pay check. Families can go into the NEX on PIR day to pay, but it's a bit crazy on PIR day, so advise you to let recruit get them earlier that week. If your recruit did not bring a debit/credit card, mail them a check. Call the NEX Photo Lab for more info on that: 847-578-6205

There are only two packages they can order:

Package A - $140.00 (no tax charged)

1 - 11x14 photo, 2 - 8x10, 2 - 5x7, 24 wallets, 1 - 11x14 formal Division photo. IMPORTANT: If they order and PAY for Package A no later than PIR day, it includes a free bonus - the Cruisebook (aka Keel Yearbook).

Package B - $120.00 (no tax charged)

1 - 8x10, 2 - 5x7, 16 wallets, 1 - 11x14 formal Division photo. There is no free bonus book in this package.

Things you can order separately:

Note: Your recruit cannot just buy a few photos, they must order a package to receive any photos at all. However they can just order a DVD or a Cruisebook without ordering photos.

DVD or Video of PIR ceremony $29.00, includes shipping. It will be mailed to the address given by recruit 5-6 weeks after PIR

Cruisebook (aka Keel Yearbook) $30.00, includes shipping. It will be mailed to the address given by recruit 12-13 weeks after PIR. NOTE: This book is printed just one time, so if it is NOT ordered and paid for by PIR day, you can never get one later. The photo lab orders the exact number of books ordered and paid for the day after PIR, so there are never any left over. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Reorders: You can order more photos in various sizes for up to one year from PIR date. There will be a form in the portrait package to do this. Reorders can only be ordered if your recruit ordered a package.

Frames: The above packages come with thick construction paper frames - it does keep them safe when traveling. The NEX also sells very nice frames in a variety of sizes and styles. Prices are on the order form that comes with the portraits.

This information was confirmed with two different employees at the NEX Photo Lab!
