Hello
We look forward to hearing about your sailors journey. How he/she likes being an MAA (MA) and which kind of job they are doing and how you are doing knowing what your sailor does for a living.
NOTE: Please help keep our sailors safe. Don't give out exact locations.Example: If he/she is in Iraq you can say Iraq but I would not say the name of the camp or a town near the camp. If they are on a ship don't give the last known location. Although some of that is public we don't in anyway want to jeopardize them.

Hi Tracy, don't know what the reason for all of the TAD staff is. At Kelcie's last base, they had TAD staff, but only used them once in a great while, like when they had an Air Show or something big going on. Now that she is on the carrier, the TAD staff seems to be a very permanent part of the unit.

Brenda Sue....I'm not sure that they would take a small bottle of baby shampoo away, as that should not be considered "contraband", but if you pass it off at the airport, be sure it is under 3oz, or TSA screeners will take it away. All kinds of rates wind up working as TDA (temporary duty assignment) with the MA's. That's why so many of them go thru the mini training and get OC'd.

but Cathy, he won't be able to take it back on base with him. (hhmmm - maybe hide a very small bottle in his pocket) - but I think they check them for cell phones and such. If he is grad and go and you get to go to the airport with him - you can hand him things like cell phone, laptop, and baby shampoo there.

hhmmm - do all rates have to go thru mini MA training or just ET's? My friends son that did was also a ET. hahah - her name is Molly also!!

Kelaine....BrendaSue is correct. My daughter is an MA aboard the USS George Washington. The ET's do go thru a mini MA training, and it DOES include the OC spray. My daughter said that some of the ET's aboard the GW are wonderful and she learned a lot from them. Kelcie does security sweeps during GQ drills, works in dispatch, acts as bailiff for several different levels of disciplinary hearings etc. She has never said anything about working "the brig", but I know that this is one of their area's while out to sea. Hope this give you a little information as to what your son might be looking at responsibility wise. Welcome to the group!!

Keliane, I am pretty sure that the "MA's" on ships are quite different. I've been told that they pretty much have guard duty and handle security on the ship. Also, I've been told that they are "under the command" of the MA's.
Welcome to this group though. I do know that the one kid on the ship that was assigned "security" - he also had to go through with the OC spray. You might want to read about that and give him a "heads up."

Josh's wife, thanks for the link to bandsforarms.com. I just ordered some for my girls. They'll love them and it's so nice that the money goes to the USO.

I know that the Navy provides medical staff for different branches, and Air Force provides legal staff for different branches, so it doesn't surprise me that they are now intermixing MA's also. Just like most MA's get their "A" school training at Lackland AFB. Maybe your MA's specialty plays a role in where he/she is going?
