Samray, new Sailors have flow out of Midway and O'Hare. It all depends on flight availability. Sailors in the same TG have flown out of both airports at various times and on different flights from the same airport. Your recruit will not know the flight info until very close to PIR. Some do not find out until the day of PIR.
Until he has that ticket in hand he won;t know for sure when he flies out.
We went to our sons MA Grad in March and was hoping to fly home with him. He had to stay an extra week after everyone had left. Not sure why but it is the Navy so it didn't matter. He didn't know this until the day of graduation:)
He did get his full leave before he shipped out to Bahrain though.
If by chance he gets his ticket prior to graduation and you know you will have to pay to change it.
Good Luck!
@tmansmom58 thank you....we are trying to spend as much time with him as we can
My SR will be leaving from boot camp to San Antonio in Aug. What airport do they usually fly from? Wanting to be at same when we both fly out
Not the mother of a MA, but my Sailor is stationed in Bahrain and has been there almost a year.
As Tyler'sMom stated, encourage him to pack light. Have him ask someone (his sponsor?) what he needs to have a far as uniforms go. He will be getting new NWUs when he gets there, but he may need a couple to start with. All of his winter clothing can stay home. Definitely not needed!
I don't know what rate he is, which will determine if he lives on base or off base. All E-4's and below live on base, above that they are placed in hotels until perm housing can be found. So, your son will want to take some civilian clothing since uniforms may never, cannot, not ever, nope never be worn off base. There are regs on what clothing can be worn, and most of them are common sense, but t-shirts can be a yes or no. T-Shirts cannot have anything political, military, or offensive. Yes, something not offensive to us might be over there. When in doubt don't wear it. :)
My son is grateful for "cooling" t-shirts, and cooling towels. They can be purchased through Amazon, and can be found in sporting good stores (kinda pricey there). They pack very well, and don't take up much space. He wears them most of the time now since it is a balmy 100+ during the day, the low 90's at night (LOL), and humidity can be high.
A good water bottle is a must, they are less expensive to purchase here. Stuff is expensive over there!
Hi MOMOF467!
Welcome to the Journey! Yes, My son has been in Bahrain since April.
First of all encourage him to pack light. He should be able to come home after MA school so he will basically be bringing everything home that he has, so he can leave things home that he knows he won't need. My son left a white uniform, 1 of his peanut butter's, his pea coat, and the hats that go with.
So basically he took 1 white, 1 blue uniform. He knew that he would get the new NWU so he didn't take that. He took his sea bag and his garmet bag and his back pack.
He Knew that he would be issued a new NWU with everything. I discourage him form taking a lot of personal clothes with him since I knew that he would be shopping. If he left anything behind that he wished he had I could send it. (He is asking for his lifting shoes and lifting belt).
Funny thing, when he flew out of Colorado, in April there was a big storm in Atlanta, where he was flying in for a connecting flight to Norfolk. His luggage was delayed so he flew out for Bahrain without his bags. Fortunately, he had his paperwork and essentials in his back pack with him. He got his bags 2 weeks later so they must have excused him for not having his dress uniforms. I really don't think they are in them that much anyway. NWU's mostly.
We figured that he will acrue lots of stuff in the 2 years that he is out there so he can ship stuff home when it is time.
Going out there is stressful for them. It is a bit scary and they are so tired from traveling, the lighter they can travel the better.
My son adjusted fast out there but said that some were not adjusting quickly. They need to be flexible and settle in, the quicker the better.
It sounds like it's not that bad and he says that there are worse places to be.
Good luck to your son! It is very humbling to be a part of this community. The only thing stronger than Navy, is Navy Moms!
We are here for them and each other!
