daisy72, The discussion, Graduation Info for Lackland AFB - Navy MA graduation; Places to s..., may have some info for you.
Others who have been lately should also post info there to help others and to keep the info current.
We stayed at a hotel close to Sea World. Was very close to the freeway and only took about 10 mins to get to the base and for the life of me I can't remember the name. It took us about 15mins to get to the Alamo and other attractions. I Pricelined the hotel and got it for $45.00 a night....great deal.
Tip....get your base pass the day before graduation if you can. You need to show your ID (everyone who will be going on base will) and it can be busy at times.
Enjoy graduation. It's much more relaxed than PIR and the officers encourage the parents to get up and take pictures. They'll pause to pose for pictures....it was great.
Sorry to hear of the loss of the MA2. Sending prayers to his family....God bless u.
Good Morning!!!
Thank you lemonelephant. It helps to know it gets subtracted form either one.
:)
Bird Mom1, it's a little confusing, but this is my understanding of how it works. Your SR's time as active duty began when he was sworn in at MEPS the second time on the way to the RTC and that is when his Time in Service (TIS) and Time in Rate (or Grade) are counted from and when his pay is counted from. Enlistments include 4 years of active duty followed by a time as Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) for 4 years (6 and 2 for some ratings) when the Navy could recall him to active duty if the need arose. The time in DEP is subtracted from the IRR time that your Sailor will have to serve because he technically could have been called up to serve early at any time during his time in DEP; for reservists, the time is DEP is subtracted from the total reserve contract time if I understand it correctly (someone in Navy Reserve Moms would be better able to answer about those with a reserves contract though and reservists have some sort of point system that I don't know anything else about). So time in DEP counts--sort of. There was a time that time in DEP counted toward pay at retirement, but that has been removed and now only time that is actually served as Active Duty ever counts toward pay.
Bird MoM1,
Our son signed up for DEP last August and did not leave for Boot Camp until April 1st. I have read his enlistment papers over several times and it does indicate that his time in DEP will count toward his enlistment. After all, he was technically in the Navy as of his DEP date. However, it is not clear whether or not it will count for pay purposes as in time in grade. Perhaps someone else on this site can shed more light on that.
Good Morning!
I have a question for anyone that would know. I was looking over my son's papers he signed this past March for DEP. Once he signed them, he went to PT quite often when he had to. He left July 24th, shipped out July 25th. I was reading over his initial enlistment papers. It said that anytime served in DEP would go towards his fulfillment of his military service obligation. Is this actually true? I have been told yes by some and no by some. Not sure which one it is LOL.
