Betsy- very cool! Let us know when/if it broadcasts. I wonder if Gunnar will get special treatment so the filming looks good?
Haha, wait til you read this post...... :)
I got an email from my sailor this morning and he said that NBS Nightly News is planning to film a segment for the news on the Tiger Cruise. They asked for names of sailors and parents to conduct interviews with prior to the cruise, follow around during the cruise and also to follow up after the cruise. They got hundreds of names from the ship and picked 5 sailors. Yep, my Adam was picked! :) So, they are going to follow Adam and my husband Gunnar around during the cruise and film them, hehe! Adam said he has to meet with their videographer tomorrow. Isn't that the coolest thing? Gunnar's tiger cruise experience will now be documented for all of posterity on the national news, lol. Of course, that is if he doesn't end up on the cutting floor, because the stuff he says will be too dumb to put on the news, lol. ;)
Woohoo, Linda! I'm so glad that the loon has surfaced. Congratulations to Joey on getting his Dolphins. That is awesome!
Well, Joey just called. He sounds good and he is glad to be back on land. The sub came in at 8am and he didn't get off until 9 pm - nukes are last off. He said the next patrol will be better since he now has his Dolphins. He said he has off 2 weeks in May and will spend a week at home (his fiancée will go out there for a few days first). I am much happier now that I have talked to him!
Congratulations Betsy - what a great honor for your son!
Still haven't heard from Joey but I got a text with a picture of his submarine qualification - he did it in one patrol. Now he has his dolphins! Now if he would just call me - he posted on Facebook that he hit some golf balls today. Maybe tomorrow....
Thanks, I think his Chief was the one who nominated him.
Oh, forgot to add that he I'm pretty sure that Blue Jacket of the Quarter is the same thing as Junior Sailor of the Quarter.
Joanne, it's hard to find what it is, but here's a message on N4M's about it. I'm sorry it is so long, but I copied and pasted it from a post on N4M's.
"What is Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ)?
Well that is an extremely honorable award to get. What it means is your son was selected out of all the other Sailors in his department as the "best of the best". They divide the SOQ into two groups, they are Junior Sailor of the Quarter (JSOQ) for the E4's and below, and Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ) for E5's and E6's.
Each division is suppose to nominate a JSOQ and SOQ candidate. Some divisions don't because maybe their division they don't think any of them are worthy of the award.
The chain of event is this:
1. The Division Chief or LPO recognize the true "Front Runners" in their division.
2. They spend 6 hours writing a JSOQ and/or SOQ nomination letter to the SOQ board.
3. The board review all the write up's. The command wide LPO's review the JSOQ's, and the Division Chief's review the SOQ's.
Most people think the write up will sell the Sailor, it doesn't. The write up is just like a resume, it just gets you in the door.
4. The board sets a date when to start the interview of the candidates. This is where the Sailor must shine. The JSOQ or SOQ reports in their class "A" uniform (Whites or Blues). He must be able to sell himself and answer questions not normally thought of. This is were the Sailors sink or swims. So it all comes down to them.
5. The board members then select who was the best fit for the Navy image.
6. Lastly, a lot of Sailors think to be nominated for Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY) or Sailor of the Year (SOY) you must win the Sailor of the Quarter (either JSOQ or SOQ). Most of the time this is true, but it doesn't have to be.
Sorry to be so wordy.... I just wanted you to know that you should be extremely proud of him... It's really hard to get and he should be recognized for his efforts...."
