Hi y'all!
Just popped on to say "Hello" and let you all know that I saw the date of Oct. 27 - I think that is ok for me. D returns from Afgh right after that, as far as we know...If I find out he will be back sooner than they are currently saying, I would not be able to meet - I'll be down at Camp L for the homecoming.
I have lots to do - getting ready to move, paint, try again to get my drivers license (- UGH! Maryland requires more to get DL that the Fed. Gov't. requires to travel internationally!) and get vehicles registered...all so we can vote - which must be done by Oct. 15!
Betsy - the story of the mail...boo...so terribly sorry.
ok, talk to y'all later :-)
Lori, thanks, I know I actually did cry when he told me that today. :( (Luckily, it was through FB chat, so he couldn't hear me, lol) I can't even remember all the things that were in those boxes, but I will try to send some more things tomorrow. It did make me realize now that I am taking pictures of the contents from now on, before I send boxes. If anything does happen, then I will know what he didn't receive. Hopefully, it won't happen again, but who knows? Now, I'm really afraid to send him anything of value, because if it gets as far as the Navy, insuring it with the post office wouldn't matter at all. One of the moms on the Stennis page is getting ready to mail an XBox, she is so glad that she hadn't sent that yet. I just mailed the sleep stuff the other day, so I'm pretty sure that it probably hasn't gotten as far as the ship yet, so that's good. Adam does know that I have sent 4 boxes, so he said he will tell me what is in the the boxes that he does get. I'm ordering another set of contact lenses today, at least I hope I don't have any problems doing that again on 1-800-Contacts. I was worried the last time when I ordered them, because he hadn't had an eye exam since boot camp in 2010, but they did fill the order. I'm hoping they do again.
I'm still planning to get together on the 27th, but you're right, I haven't noticed Linda on here lately either. I hope she checks in soon. I'll try to pm her and maybe she gets her notifications in her email's from here.
Anna did tell me that she could make either the 20th or 27th, so hopefully she an make it. She has been in NC this recently visiting her family. She also did say that she might be off the site for awhile because she is preparing to move soon, but to keep her updated. I will let her know that we are thinking about 27th.
Betsy- my heart sank [ no pun intended] when I read that. How does this happen so regularly? I know how much love I put in the boxes I sent Paul so I can totally sympathize with you. Every time I packed a box- having picked out things I knew he liked- I always prayed it would get to him. Two pallets lost for the Stennis alone? I am so sorry. You had some expensive things too. A watch and contacts? Ugh. How horrible for all the sailors waiting for their care packages. Paul ordered a Ipad from Amazon when he was on the ship-[ he got it] but can you imagine the kind of things that may be lost in the ocean? Just makes me feel sick.
I'm glad you got to talk to Adam briefly. Doesn't it make a world of difference just to hear their voice? Sounds like he got some R&R which is good. They need that. Being on a ship is really hard. They have 24 hour shifts and it's very demanding. So I guess the sleep stuff you sent to is gone as well? Poor Adam.
I hope the 27th will work for all of us. Haven't "seen" anyone else on here in awhile. Where are you ladies? Joanne texted me from Boston so they made it there and then when they had boarded the plane for Ireland so hopefully they are having a great time now! Tired I'm sure. I've done the red eye flights to England many times and it's really hard to adjust when you get there.
Well, it happened to the Stennis too.............Adam just told me that during their last RAS, they lost 2 pallets of mail in the ocean. :( *tear I have already mailed 4 boxes, but I think the first 2 were probably in that batch. He does know that 2 more boxes are coming and I'm going shopping today to replace the items in one of the boxes. One box was just candy, snacks, etc., so I'm not too worried about that one, but the other one did have a watch and contact lenses in it, as well as shampoo, some frebreeze stick ups, etc. :( I'm just heartsick knowing that all those sailors are waiting for things from home and this happened.
Joanne, I hope you are happily on your way now. I hope the rain didn't hold up your flight. Have a great time and I can't wait to hear all about your trip.
lori, I haven't heard of any being dropped yet, but who knows it could have happened? I sure hope not. I did hear that the Enterprise had two pallets of food dropped in the ocean about a week ago. :(
Adam called me this morning and we had about 3 minutes to talk. He sounded pretty good and happy. They were walking back to the ship after liberty. He said that he had gone snorkeling and even though the actual snorkeling itself was not what he expected, the boat ride to the island was awesome! They leave Malaysia tomorrow. Still no boxes yet, and it will be 4 weeks since I mailed 2 of them on Friday. :( I'm mailing another one tomorrow, since he has asked for some things to help him sleep. I'm sending melatonin, Benadryl and Sleepytime Tea, along with some other things. I really do hope he gets some of the boxes soon.
I'm not making any plans for the 27th, so hopefully we can get together that day.
Joanne, the only sure way of not getting bumped on an over booked flight is to be there EARLY and check in and let them SEE you there. Make eye contact, even a big smile or a pleasant comment to the flight attendant at the desk will go a long way. That way you will get on the flight. The passengers who check in late or aren't standing by the desk when they start boarding risk being bumped. I'll be praying for your trip tomorrow that all goes well. Have fun and relax!
Betsy- I think once they make port Adam will get his boxes. Sometimes that happened. All depended on where they were and the mail ship getting to them. Watch he'll get all 4 at once! Feast or famine!!! One time a whole container was dropped in the ocean! I hadn't sent anything that time to Paul but I'm sure a lot of sailors didn't get their mail. I hope that call comes through for you!
Joanne, you leave this tuesday right? It was a good day for a yard sale yesterday- glad you made some money. Have a wonderful trip and contact me when you get back ok? I hope that it works out you can make the lunch. It wouldn't be the same without you : (
Lori, Wow, I knew there was theft, but I never realized how intense it could be on the ship. I have asked Adam about it and he said that so far, nothing has been taken from him, but he also hasn't gotten any of the 4 boxes that I have sent yet either. A lot of the moms on the ship's group have said that their sailors have told them that their sons/daughters have said that tensions have been high lately, so I guess since it's their 2nd deployment in a year, it has really gotten to some of the sailors. I told Adam in today's email that he should just lay low and do his job. He did say that things will probably be much better once they get some liberty.
They have anchored in Malaysia! I can't wait to hear his voice!
I'm going to put the 27th on my calendar and hope we can all meet. It's open for me.
Betsy- that doesn't sound good. Paul never told me if there were verbal disagreements. On the day of HC when he brought us on the ship I saw a sailor who was still on it and said "I hope you have a nice leave"and he told us that he wouldn't be getting off the ship. Later Paul told us that he had punched another sailor and his leave was revoked. Oh. I asked Paul if he had witnessed any fights and he said no but just heard about them. I can see how tempers could run short but for the most part they keep them so busy and they are usually too tired but it happens. When the ship ran low on water [ it happens!] they cut off the washers and limit hygiene time. Paul said he was running low on underwear and didn't know what he would do if it didn't come back on soon. Can you imagine the lines for the washers then? Sometimes the guys would have to do their wash in the early hours of the morning! And they learn to NEVER leave the washers or dryers until they have their wash in hand. You wouldn't believe the thefts that happen on a ship! This is all a learning process for them. The food is awful too. I saw it first hand and I can tell you- send care packages every week! It takes around 3 weeks to get to them depending where they are. All this can make tempers short as you can imagine.
