Adam and I started our drive on Tuesday and have made it as far as Albuquerque. We are staying in NM until Tuesday and it's been so nice because we have been able to spend time with my daughter Michelle and my son Eric. Adam and I also have some good friends that we have been able to see while here. It's funny because I really haven't seen much of Adam, since he's spending time with his friends and I am spending time with mine. Adam has been having a great time reconnecting with his friends too. We leave here on Tuesday and will stop overnight in Las Vegas, Reno and Eugene OR on the way to Bremerton. I'm hoping that we may actually arrive in time to see the Stennis pull into port. That would be so awesome to see! Adam's sponsor from the ship told him that he will probably be able to spend the weekend with me since he won't have to report until March 5. I fly out of Washington on March 5, so he will drive me to the airport on March 4. I'll just find a comfortable spot there overnight and then fly back to MD on Monday. I am not even starting to think about the fact that every single mile we drive, is one more mile that he will be away from me. Ok, I lied. Yes, I have thought about that. But, I'm trying to focus on the positive and enjoy the time I have right now. The tears will most certainly come later.
Joanne- so happy you get to have Jason home soon!
Betsy- I love your little guys wandering all over the place! Glad Adam made it to MD ok. And to have 4 of your kids home at the same time! I can't remember the last time that happened in my house! I guess I've gotten used to it [not]. It's good you wrote that you are flying home cause I was thinking how hard that would be for you to drive home by yourself. Have a wonderful time with your boy!
Irzizhme [ gosh that's hard to write!] glad you came back! My son is stationed in SD and LOVES it. I'm sure your daughter will be happy to get there. Reading your story about the chips I was thinking -- $50 to send CHIPS???? How heavy could that be? The PO is killing us with these charges! I sent my son his first care package to his ship and I did the large flat rate [ if it fits it ships] box and filled that thing to the brim. Because it's a FPO address it's $2 off the flat rate price which was worth it cause the box was heavy. I asked him what to send and he said FOOD! What kind? "Doesn't matter - just send FOOD mom!" I' now in the process of gathering another food box together.
What rate is your daughter? Oh- congrats on your new job!
irzizhme, that's so funny that you said that about the chips. The first thing that my son from New Mexico bought at the grocery store, when he got home, was Utz Crab Chips. I'm hoping we plan another lunch pretty soon too. I hope to meet you too.
Lori & Cindy, thanks for the well wishes. :)
Joanne, I bet you are just counting the minutes to Jason's homecoming. I totally understand about wishing your daughter was home too. We have 5 children and this week, we were fortunate to have 4 of them in MD. My daughter, who is in college in NM, is the only one who couldn't be here.
My daughter left this morning to go back to Hawaii, so I've been a little weepy today. Tomorrow, my son from New Mexico, goes home.
Adam drove on Friday and Saturday and arrived in to Maryland on Saturday night. It was so nice to have 4 of my kids home, at least for 2 nights. He did say that on Friday, before he left base in Pensacola, he went to pick up his Orders and found out that they had only allowed him one day travel. Apparently he told the guy, at least 5 times, that he was driving, but he put one day travel time. He got it changed to 8 days travel and thank goodness, we now don't have to leave to drive until next week. His original report date of, no later than, March 6 is now back.
We will probably leave Maryland either Feb. 20 or 21 now. We will stop in Albuquerque for 3 nights to see my daughter and son and then be on our way. Adam wants to get to Bremerton, WA by March 4, so I will probably spend the 5th with him, checking out the base, and then fly home on March 6
Hello fellow moms,
Sorry I haven't touched in for a while..new job and trying to keep up with my daughter and all her Navy stuff is hectic!! lol She is now in Washington State and graduates from her A-school on the 23 of this month and its off to San Diego from there. I found out sending her any kind of packages is very expensive and takes extra long to get there. She is complaining that there are no Crab chips out there and I had to send her several bags along with other stuff and i was gonna send it over night until they said 50 bucks..and I said another couple days won't kill her..lol But she did buy me an ipod so I can do this face time and I love it!! When I first did it, I cried when I saw her face, but I still miss her dearly and it's still hard to get used to..but it's coming along slowly!! I'm still looking forward to a meet and greet with some of you mothers..so please keep me posted of any upcoming dates and times. thanks so much!!!
That is quite an undertaking you've planned Betsy! I know you must be so happy to see Adam and I pray all will go well with your drive out to WA. Do you drive back or fly? Blessings to you and let us know how everything went when you get a chance.
Lori, your family is really spread out. Wow, Scotland! I totally agree, you need that grand daughter nearby. It felt so awful when I was in NM and my two grandchildren were back here in MD.
My Adam is on his first leg of his road trip. He drove about 8 hours today from Pensacola to Augusta, GA. He has a Navy buddy stationed there and is spending the night at his place. Tomorrow he will drive about 9 1/2 hours to Maryland. I can't wait to see him. We have our daughter home from Hawaii until Monday (with the Navy bf) and our older son is home from New Mexico until Tuesday. So Adam will be able to see 3 of his siblings before he goes to Washington. (One daughter lives in MD). Adam just got word that his report date to the Stennis is now Feb. 26 (instead of March 6), so our journey out west will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 15. We will stop in Nashville, TN Oklahoma City, OK Albuquerque, NM (for 2 nights to see our youngest daughter and older son) Las Vegas, NV, Reno, NV and Eugene, OR. then on to Bremerton, WA. Wish us luck with the weather. Be back soon.
Cindy thanks for the link! I saw it on the Vinson FB. The helicopters looked and sounded like giant bees! I asked Paul about the trash and he said they unload it to another ship. That's what they were doing in this. And they get deliveries from ships to. I started to think about how much trash a 5,000 plus ship must generate on a daily basis! Can you imagine? Paul said they compact the trash down and recycle what they can. The food gets tossed.
I just sent my first box to him on Monday. Complete with Old Bay! He said it could take up to a month to get there. I hope not.
Betsy- it is so hard having your chicks spread out all over the states. I have one in Scotland now. At least I have one daughter in MD. The other is in NC but they will be coming for a visit next month. Her sister and I are going to put on the screws to try and get her and her husband [ and MY granddaughter] to move back. She hates the weather here. Well I can't blame her but it's not about HER it's about having her baby grow up around family!
Debbie, awesome idea! I'll have to remember to store that one in my head for when Adam is ready for care packages.
Cindy, Wow, that is pretty cool about your Paul's "cranking" experience.
Yes things are finally moving along for Adam. He was re-classed back in May of 2010 and started his A school for CTT in July, so he didn't lose too much time thank goodness. He finished up A school at the end of November and then with the holiday stand downs, we were kinda surprised that he did get his Orders so soon after Christmas. I had heard (on the CT group) that CT's could be holding for many months, but luckily he actually only had to wait a couple of weeks after Christmas stand down for his Orders. He is excited, but a little disappointed because he hoped to be on a cruiser. But, oh well, it's the Navy. :) The Stennis will be back in port before he reports, so he will probably be in WA for awhile before his first deployment. We have been to Seattle before, so he is excited about going back to the Pacific NW. So, as of next summer, I will have one child in Maryland, 2 children in New Mexico, 1 in Colorado (my daughter's bf is getting out of the Navy and they are moving to Boulder) and now one in Washington state. My little Honda will be racking up the mileage now.
