Joanne, glad you're feeling better. I wish I had known about sending other guys mail in Paul's BC. I would have done that. At his PIR I saw a couple guys that didn't have any family with them as they were not from the US. I don't know if they got mail or not. Paul never told me.

Betsy- i love PF Chang's as they have a GF menu. I loved your idea of the clock time that you sent your son! What fun!

We didn't have any pets when Paul went in but he did get a photo of his sisters dogs.

Kwtracey- are you on the boot camp mom's site?

Great ideas, Betsy, thanks!

Joanne, I'm sorry that you were feeling ill, but glad to hear that you are better now.  :)

Debbie, we missed you and can't wait to meet you next time.

Lori, I didn't realize that you had to avoid gluten foods, but I did notice that you asked what was in your meal on Saturday.

kwtracey, I also sent my son a copy (on paper) of a picture of himself when he was 3.  He was wearing a little sailor outfit and I captioned it "A look into the future?"

My son's PIR date was on the 17th, and one day I happened to notice on our PIR group page that the countdown clock was on 17 days, 17 hours, 17 minutes and then, of course, I sat there and waited for it to turn over to 17 seconds and took a picture of my computer screen.  I sent that to him and he loved it.   I also sent a picture of my dog with a sign around it's neck that said "I miss you and I'm hungry" because my son used to feed her (l borrowed that one from another mom on N4M's.)  I also would send him funny facts, random facts and trivia facts that I would get online.  He loved those.

Oh Joanne, you even mentioned that to me on Saturday. It would be good to find out what was in that sauce so you could avoid that at all costs. I ask for ingredients every time I eat out to make sure there is no gluten. Wait staff are usually very good about finding the ingred out if you ask. Or they will ask in the kitchen for you. This is info you need to have. Each allergic episode could get worse.

I didn't know about the questions at the time so just made up a bunch myself. With funny ones too. Like " how do you like wearing the whitey tightys" to which he replied he couldn't wait to burn them!

Sorry Joanne you aren't feeling well. Is it a reaction to the shots do you think?

Thanks, Lori. She asked me to keep her up to date on the news, but I am afraid that the news lately has been too depressing to send, so I've been really stretching to find things to write about.

Comment by lori on August 8, 2011 at 9:31am

Kwtracey- I felt that way too. What to write? My days are hardly exciting! But I would write about his nephews and nieces. I would tell him the stories from work

[ I work in an ER]. Things I'd heard on the news. He said he didn't mind me just writing about my boring days. Their days are filled with stuff e can't relate to and they just want "normalcy" from us. Your daughter will enjoy hearing ANYTHING you write! And sorry I wrote "son"- I just forgot you had written "daughter" as we don't get too many on here with girls.

I'm sure your daughter will be a much better writer than our sons have been. Girls tend to be much better at expressing themselves.

That's great! Some days it is so hard to come up with something to write about. I'm hoping that it will get easier after we start receiving letters from her. I really appreciate the ideas.

Joanne - that is a bummer that you got sick.  I had no problems.  I hope you feel better soon for your trip! I can't wait to see some pictures!

kwtracey - I started writing my letters but I have horrible handwriting. So I started doing it on the computer.  My son is a huge Capitals fan (ice hockey), so I would copy articles into his letters so he knew how they were doing.  I also looked for anything that was funny to send him.  I copied pictures into my letters.  One of the pictures was his cousins holding letters that said "We love you Joey".  Boot camp is the hardest - A school is so much better (at least for me as a mom - he calls every week).   Hang in there - your daughter is doing something wonderful for herself and our country!
