Hi Everyone!  I'm sorry I've been MIA.  I was set to go to PA last week house-hunting, but a last minute family emergency kept me from going. It involved a lot of research and work, but everything is now in place and going fairly well. Just as I felt I was recovering from the emotions of that I received word that my husband's youngest sister's husband had a massive stroke. Things are touch and go with him still and we are in a wait and see period.

My sailor got some great news this am.  (I so needed to have some good, happy news!!!)  He was named sailor of the year for his squadron.  So proud of him. He is very happy about it.  Hoping it will help as he takes his chief exam and fills out all the paperwork for that.  Says next up is competition for sailor of the year for the group. He is doubtful about making that, but he is happy for what he has received.

Son left for BC today, nice to see him so excited to go.  Thanks again to everyone who has been so supportive -- it has meant a lot to me and really helped a lot!  Am sad I can't make the packing party this weekend, but look forward to the next event.

Just got back from my son's PIR  10/11.   Anyone  that has a son/daughter in BC or going in future I would be happy to answer any questions.

Helen, do not worry about the phone cards.  I sent him with 1, sent 2 and he bought some at the NEX.   The phones eat up extra minutes just connecting.  I think more important write as much as you can.  They really live for those letters

@ Nick's Mom from RI.  The information about the pie in a jar is in the Molly's Adopt A Sailor group.  There is a link to it near the top of the page.  It also gives instructions about making a cake in a jar.  I made cakes for my son's birthday when he was deployed.  Sent a tub of frosting so he and his buddies could frost their cakes before eating them!  They loved it.  My son said it was like it came right from the oven.

On the other side, when I sent him his fav apple pie recipe and baked it in a jar.  He took the metal covers off and then warmed it in the microwave.  All his bunk-mates came running to find out what smelled so good!  But my son lied and told them all that I had only sent a couple (so he couldn't share!!)  That's why I sent enough cake for all of them.

He commented that they were very good.  Just like fresh-baked.  He loved them and said it was like being home for Thanksgiving and then Christmas.  Just what I wanted!

Thank you to everyone who helped me figure out the phone cards.  I am hopeful that my brain will return to normal once my son leaves for bootcamp!  For the benefit of anyone who might be as brain dead as I am, I thought I’d summarize everything I’ve learned about phone cards in the past few days.

The Navy RTC recommends that your SR bring a phone card.  See the Navy’s Family Guide:  http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/pdfs/FamilyGuide.pdf.  It says that most recruits will make 3 calls durin bootcamp.

There are two types of prepaid calling cards – those that can be used on any phone and those that must be used with a certain cell phone “cell phone cards”).  Your SR needs the type that can be used on any phone.  A domestic card should suffice unless your SR will be calling an international location.

There are numerous retailers that carry these card including CVS, Rite-Aid, Star Market, and Walmart.  At CVS, both types of cards are displayed on the same rack as other gift cards.  At Walmart, the “any phone cards” (which you want) are located near the check-out registers.   The “cell phone cards” (which you do not want) are in the Electronics Department.

If you cannot locate appropriate cards or cannot afford to purchase them, go to http://callsforrecruits.org/.  Calls for Recruits is run by a Navy vet whose son is also in the Navy.  He will e-mail you eight 20-minute cards, with instructions to share two cards with fellow recruits who do not have calling cards.  He does not charge for this generous service, which is provided by private donations.

After you purchase your cards, follow the directions to activate it and have your SR make a practice call or two.  Also, advise your SR to protect it while at bootcamp, since they are a desirable item.

Hi Ladies, "pie in a jar" is just that. You bake a mini pie in a mason jar and when they come out of the oven you place the vacuum seal lid on. As the jar cools the vacuum seal is created. Whoever figured it out is a brilliant.

Donna, I will have all the boxes packed and ready to go. The jars will each be wrapped in a pair of socks, I got 300 pairs donated by Ralph Lauren. So every Sailor gets pie and new socks!

We are calling this "Operation Sailors, Socks and Pie" :)
