@ A-MJ's Mom, are you in for some fun in Boston?
Anyone else want to join the fun??
OK, when do we want to go? Not too close to 6/30 because that doesn't fit in with A-MJ's Mom's schedule. Want to aim for Thursday or Friday? Fleet Week ends on Saturday.
After talking to some Moms, I think we should just make this a fun outing for us. I can make up some of the brochures and we can leave them with people who might want to have their ship or unit "adopted."
But let's not go to a lot of trouble. We can see how things work and we can always do something different next year.
Let's make this ALL ABOUT US & a little subtle "recon".
Now, what do you think?
Hi Kathy! It would be kinda both. Last year the Commander offered us a table. Molly's has a really nice tri-fold brochure on what we do. I have a girlfriend who was gathering beanie babies at yard sales that we could let people pay to adopt and tie a note to a wounded soldier or one of our adoptees. I have a pile of cards and there's time to collect more thinking of you & get well cards that we could have available for people to sign and then we can use them in our adoption packages. And we could have fun meeting with the sailors, marines & coasties. I know Molly spent several days at Fleet Week in Portland getting to know the sailors and trying to get info about MAS into their hands for when they deploy.
I think a good thing is just trying to get the word out about N4Ms and MAS. Other groups have had sample care packages and let people pay $25 for us to send one in their name, we'd give them note paper to write on. I don't know that we want to go THAT far because then someone would always have to be at the table.
What ideas do you have? We can make our own MA version!! We could try to get people to bake cookies (even if they can't go), package them 2 to a baggie and hand them out along with a hug to any military person that stops by?
All ideas are welcome and nothing is set in stone at this point.
I saw the posting under "Events" that it wasn't an official N4M sponsored event, so we can go the Molly route or MA group. I think we just need to be certain that we do things in a nice, neat and orderly fashion to put us in a good light.
I will try to reach the Lt. Cmdr. tomorrow and see what she has to say and if she has any thoughts and then let you and A-MJ's Mom know. Also, Sheryl may still be around and hopefully some of the Moms from the last packing party will be able to help out.
Either way, it will be a fun outing for us!
Hey Sheryl,
What's the chances you could stay into July?? Would your hubby want to help with Fleet Week too? Just asking. I don't want to get you into trouble with him, I know you can't stay forever. Wish you could tho.
Hi A-MJ's Mom! Fleet Week is when Navy & Coast Guard ships visit ports around the country. It is a time to honor Sailors, Marines & Coasties. You can visit the ships and there are usually demonstrations from the different branches. I don't think we have enough time to do anything really big. But I thought I'd float the idea out there to see who might like to do something. We could carpool to save on gas and parking. I haven't picked a date but if you are willing and will be coming back on the 30th, I would suggest later in the week and maybe choose a week-day over a week-end -- that is if Moms could do that.
BTW, my sailor is in Groton too!
I checked the Fleet Week schedule & there is nothing planned for Groton, CT or Newport, RI; just Boston.
Donna, I'd be willing to help with the "fleet week" whatever that is. I am gone to Alaska from 5/15 to 6/30 but would be back that week. My sailor is in Groton, CT if that's where the stuff is happening too. Love the pix BTW!
Hey, MA Mommas, I just found Boston's Fleet Week as an event here on N4M!!! If you remember we tried to do something last year but couldn't. Want to try again?!
The dates are 6/30 - 7/7. I found the person in charge. The same as last year: Lt. Cmdr. Pamela Bou.
Anyone interested? I'd love to do something, but not by myself. Let me know.
Just checked my sailor's FB page and since he's announced it, I guess I can too!
He got on his plane for home around 3:30am this morning and will be home shortly after midnight tonight - or is that really tomorrow morning? Don't know. Don't care. Just packing to check into a hotel near the base after dinner so we can try to nap before getting up for the homecoming ceremony.
I can hardly stand myself ~ I'm so excited and so happy. FINALLY.
