btmom, you couldn't get me to stay away from PIR. I would have to be on my death bed lol. Thanks for the info.

Yes Jaz04 he will be a SeaBee, they are the construction battallions in the Navy. Are you going to PIR? It's really neat and you will be amazed at the change in your son. We went for our son's, April 30. We knew what to expect as both my husband and I are ex-Navy. Brandon's former roommate went with us and he was a little surprised in the change in Brandon.

btmom, I am not sure. This is all new to me. I just know he is off to MS for a-school and he is to be a BU. If you understand this more than me, please explain. Thanks, Karen

I am getting so excited for my sons PIR next Friday. He is off the Gulfport on the third. Excited too to hear about the new adventure from him.

Lisa - We arrived a few days early and stayed at the Navy Lodge on base. We did get a preview of the USS Essex as Katie needed to get something from her 'rack', so we got visitor passes and tagged along. We walked up town, visited places in the Sasebo, Japan, area, tried sushi, and saw most of the base before the cruise.
The day of the cruise we could arrive as early as 7 am and they wanted us there by 8 am (unfortunately we were drenched in the rain on the walk over). We left port at 10 am. I was assigned to the female marine berthing area (lower rack) and my son to a male berthing. When I laid on my back and rested my elbow on the mattress, my finger tips touched the top of the rack. In our area there were 4 sinks, 3 toilets and 2 showers. We were served 3 meals a day with breakfast starting at 5:45 a, 10:45 a lunch and 3:45 dinner. We saw every area of the ship except for the 'restricted' areas and were able to take any pics we wanted. We saw helicopter maneuvers, LCU entering and exiting the well deck, steel beach party on the flight deck with baloon toss, fun run, Damage Control demos including fire hose barrel races; watch the big gun shoot off and then had the opportunity to shoot 3 different sized guns ourselves, went to flight control by invitation of the air boss, visited the bridge when my son was Tiger of the Day (something they do for all the kids) and had a picture taken with the captain, well deck tour, medical tour (the lab, 6 surgical rooms, ICU and sick bay), ice cream social, karoke, iron chef demo, etc. Played cards with one of her friends and Mom (who is from MI). It was wonderful just spending time with Katie and meeting people she works with, who eat the cookies I send and friends she has made!

Definitely where comfortable tennis shoes. If your son is on a carrier, it is even bigger than the amphibious assault ship. You are sure to see some airplane demos as well;)

Kathy B - you'll have to report back after your trip to Baton Rouge. When we were on Katie's ship, we went up into flight controls by invitation of the Air Boss. Amongst other things, he said helicopter pilots are the best. Didn't ask, but figured he was one by his remark.

The Gator cruise was great! We left port at 10 AM on Wed and disembarked after Noon on Saturday. What an experience!

thanks for all the welcomes. Both my husband and I are ex-Navy. It has been a lot of years ago but in a lot of ways things are similar to when we were there. Boot camp, etc. very similar. However it does seem they keep a tighter rein on them in A school, at least at Corpsman school they do.

thanks Marianne, good chance I may know some of your friends, I sell real estate here so know a lot of the Camp Arcadia visitors. I spent 18 months in Okinawa myself when I served in the Navy.
