You ladies are making me cry with your comments of the phone calls from your son's. I totally understand what it is like to wait for that phone call because you don't know when you will be able to talk to them again. Deb, I had the same situation when my son was in BC about not wanting to miss the call while at work. I work in a preschool/daycare and we could get fired if we are using our cell at work. My co-workers & the Director were very understanding when I got a call from Allen. They allowed me to bend the rules and take whatever call I got from him. Chris~Tony it is awesome that your son could call from Iraq on his birthday. You are both in my prayers as is everybody on this website & the sailors.

Nancy, Go to the group "sub moms" there are some awesome picturs of the Hartford. If you go into the discussion titled photographs there are also some very awesome pictures of the USS Annapolis sub at the artic circle. One of the dads is a former suber and he has a wealth of information on the operations of the subs and all. It is very comforting. Robert is still in sub school down at Kings Bay but I worry still I know it is what he wants to do, that and walk on Mars if he can get into NASA so I think subs are better.

Good morning Michigan mommas ---Hope I am not too late in adding some birthday wishes for Sheri and Penny.

Generally when they take their photos at boot camp, the recruits are giving the option of ordering a yearbook (called the Keel) and a dvd of the ceremony. Both are shipped later to their home of record. The Keel has some "canned" photos covering life at boot camp but it also has individual photos of your recruits division as well as their "brother" division with their names and hometown spelled out. The DVD is from their PIR - I'm not sure what the individual costs are of these two items but I think they are great keepsakes from boot camp days.

Joyce - hope things are going well for Donnie. It is good that the Navy is making the investment and providing him with a little more schooling, Obviously they see a great sailor in the making!

Oh Penny, I know you are counting the hours until you can see that sailor! He will be going thru battle stations sometime this week and then they generally earn a ONE hour phone call to let all their family know...they are now SAILORS! Yes, if he is not leaving the boot camp side - he won't be able to take anything back to his ship. That's unfortunate as then you have the shipping expense but like you said...rules are the rules. You will find while at his PIR, these new sailors are very much all about following the rules. It is amazing the changes in the new sailors in just eight weeks - and it's all good!

They do not get to come home while waiting for A school!!! His first trip home will be after A school (depending on what his orders call from after A) the Navy knows how to keep sailors busy while on hold.......how the heck do you think those floors stay so shiny?!!! LOL Where is he heading to school Penny?

Oh Dee - I hope that I have your strength when my time comes. Thinking of you from afar this week!

Sounds like a great day for many!

Welcome Theresa, like you - former Michigander but it will always be home and I am hoping to make it back for the gathering in Frankenmuth in June :-D

Marianne - I sent you a note about katie's new ship, etc. Sasebo is beautiful and I know a few others on the ship...it's a long way from home but it's a great place.

Sheri, sounds like Sarah is off to a great start - congrats to her on passing that fitness test!

Joyce and Lori...are you doing okay so far with your recruits at boot camp? It gets easier once their letters start arriving.

I wish I'd get a letter, or a phone call or an email from my son! He hit the one year anniversary mark last week with the Navy and he has been great all year about calling/texting/mailing but he is in C school now and is in classes until midnight and we just don't hear from him as much...got spoiled while he was in A school! He did call long enough today to say...call you this weekend!
