The ones that will probably know the up to date situation are the A-school GL page. Hopefully there will be current HT families that can give you info. I know in the summer early fall there was a hold.

Our dep is shipping out Jan. 23rd and choose HT as his job. He is very excited about his rating and feels this job is a good fit for him. I guess my expectation is that he will go from PIR to A school and am a bit confused about the references to A school being on "hold". My husband and sin just met with the recruiter again this past week who didn't mention anything about A school holds. Can anyone please explain the circumstances? Thank you! SpringwaterHouse

MsKnow- My husband was interested in underwater welding, also. He has been told that it is now being subcontracted and that they are not teaching anyone else how to, but who knows. If they were to teach someone, I would guess they would have to be a class A swimmer, which is hard to do. He could start by looking into that, though.

Awe thanks, mrspeacock! :) Let me know if you have any other questions. I moved to GL while my husband was there, so I also know a little about the base and the area. Good luck to your daughter. :)

I think he "checks into" his school on Dec. 7th, but who knows what that means.  I believe he was finally processed yesterday so maybe he found out more then.  Of course, mom is the last to know anything LOL

My son is a HT. He PIR on 11-1-13 He is still on hold he said he probably wouldn't start school until January. So he to thinks he will be there till at least the spring. Does he know if he will start classes on Dec.7th?

Good afternoon fellow HT moms!  My son PIR'd this past Friday (AMAZING EXPERIENCE) and is supposed to check into his A School on Dec. 7th.  Does anyone know what the wait time is for this school?  He believes he'll be on hold for at least 6 weeks and won't leave GL till June or July.  We're hoping to plan a family trip to visit him in the spring/summer.

MsKnow,   not sure that any holiday leave he MAY get will let him get that far from IL.   I think there is a mileage limitation.   BUT things/rules could of changed in 6 years.   YES there is a thing called underwater welding.  and Underwater Nuke welding.   If that is what he wants.  I can't stress enough to talk to everyone he can that might be able to help get to that rate.  My son had underwater welding as an aspiration as well but some earlier choices limited him. and then once in the Navy, he can't get the support from those who could help him advance.   I hope your's can find the support he needs and get his wishes. The better he does in all the schools are suppose to help him with better choices of where next.
