Nice. When my son was in College in California he would bring friends with him when he came home to Oregon, It really is fun learning about there new friends.

We are especially lucky in that we live within the 300 mile liberty zone so the weekend before last my son came home and brought one of his Navy buddies from Pennsylvania. Wish he was staying there permanently!

DARmom............ Thank you for responding. I agree on everything you have said here. Hope your son is doing well and wish him the best of luck at A school. I have 2 sons that live in Ohio and some family that live in Chicago so the longer my son has to be at G.L. they wont mind. LOL

I think many are surprised when they arrive at A school expecting to start right away only to find out they have been placed on hold. My son, who had his PIR on 7/12, was on hold for 3 weeks before starting his BEQ training. He is in the last week of that (started on August 6th) and then starts HT school. Hold actually has some pluses - it gives them a chance to catch their breath, time to get familiar with the new base, and an opportunity to form friendships with others who will be in their same school. The Navy is often hurry up and wait and our sailors must learn to make the best of it. Personally, I love hold - it is that much longer he is not "in theater" of a war zone.

Carol,  Erik was in San Diego for about 3 years.   I don't think he got his first pick for his first assignment, even though he was among the top of his classes.  He did request Japan when he knew he was up for a change of duty station.   He is expected to be there 2 years as he is single and will be due for a shore duty assignment. No idea where there Navy will send him next.   His class mates went all over.  I don't know how much contact he's had with many of them.  I think there were a couple that went to San Diego but different ships.   A Hull Tech specializes in welding and fixing pipes, so you can imagine there is a world wide demand for them, where ever the ships/Naval stations are.

slightly funny side note to Hull Techs,  they are part of the group known as "Snipes"   When I found I mentioned to my son, so now I know what to look for when I go snipe hunting.  Not that I ever tried it, but he was cluesless to that prank.

Thank you Elaine for the response to my email and the friend request. How long did he get to stay in San Diego? and did he pick that or was it just given to him? and also do you know where other HT's from his class went after A school? Do you know how long he will be in Japan for and where he might be headed next? Thank you. Carol

@503 808 ship 03 Div 416 PIR Nov1,   per your message.  Mine went thru PIR in early Oct  6 years ago..  but from there he went to BECC Basic Eng school at Great Lakes, then to A school for the Hull Tech part, also at Great Lakes, different side of the base from the Basic's.   He "graduated" from that and went to his first assignment by Early March.  his first ship was San Diego home ported.   He's now in Japan.   I'd be happy to answer anything more for you.

Thank you janaimom and Elaine L, I will ask him to find out what the rule is.

@Tinat(ship 02 Div 943),  mine PIR'd early Oct.  6 years ago, but when he did I believe we went up and got him over a Christmas break but we live in Omaha, so that might of been within the mileage radius.   Not real sure what the rules are but just trying to give you an idea. your best bet would be to have him ask his instructors for latest rules on that before you make plans.  I know the separation and holidays away from home are not always easy to deal with.
