Hi Tinat.  I'm not sure at all about the holidays.  My daughter got there in June, and should be finished by mid-October.  I'm pretty sure they would have to get a chit to travel, and take leave.  I'm not sure about distance.  I wish I could be more help.  I'm sure if you asked him, he could find out all the information.  Have you joined the GL A School Mom's group? There may be someone there who can answer some of your questions. Do you know what ship your son is on at A School?

Ok thanks Janai'smom, I guess this is the norm. Would you happen to know what they do if your sailor is in school for the holidays? Do they get leave to come home? Is there a limit on how far they an travel from base? How much time is typical? I'm sorry so many questions. For the past few months I was consumed with getting to PIR,,,now all I can think of is Christmas and celebrating with him.

Hi Tinat. Congratulations to you and your new sailor!  My daughter was on hold for the first two weeks at A School, and she's on hold again for one week before starting her next strand.

Hi my sailor just graduated bootcamp on Friday and is now at A School in Great Lakes. He mentioned that a lot are on hold right now. Any idea how long they are typically on hold?

SheilaD, my daughter has about 5 weeks left to go at A School in GL.  We're not sure yet where she's headed after that.  My older daughter also wants to help with the holiday bags, and I'll be sure to join the Facebook page.  Looking forward to getting started.  Would it be okay if I copied the link to this page and put it the "Mom's of Navy Daughters" and "Northern California Navy Moms" groups that I'm in on this site?

Awesome, Janai's MOM!  Do you have a son or daughter on the Boxer or the Truman?

Do you go on Facebook?  You should join the site there, Navy For Moms 5th Annual Holiday Project.  :))

SheilaD, I just sent a friend request to the group for the Holiday project.  Count me in!

I belong to a group here on N4M and Facebook, called Navy for Moms Holiday project.  We send stockings/goodie bags to sailors and marines on ships deployed during the holidays.  We have chosen to 'adopt' two ships this year - the USS Boxer and the USS Truman.  Please join the group, if you'd like, and help us send holiday cheer to these crews!

The Face book group is called Navy for Moms 5th Annual Holiday Project.  Just look for it on Facebook and join, if you'd like.

Have a great day!
