SheilaD - You'll be amazed at how fast the time goes! Before you know it you'll be watching him graduate :] (assuming you're flying out for the graduation) the weekend you get together will fly by even faster. lol

We received our son's form letter today, with a wonderful 4 lines from our SR!  He sounds in good spirits, too.  He is in Ship 11/Division 350, PIR 10/21/11.  So great to hear him sound so positive!

Got my 'I'm here' call at 2:50am this morning!  He left MEPS in Brooklyn yesterday (we went in to watch the oath), but his flight was delayed. Glad he had his cell phone!  I am so happy that he's on his way!  Thanks for the encouragement, too!!

Thanks HisMom and Elaine L.!  Navy Moms stick together, right? I do like the Marine acronym.  I'll pass that one along to my son.

He left today at 1pm - I cried and so did his sister, but the boys and his Dad hugged him and said 'see ya'.  We're going to meet him at the hotel and give him one last dinner out, then hug him ourselves.  I am going to MEPS tomorrow for his swearing in, too.  Oh, this is harder than I thought it would be.  :(

Funny.  I think guys pick on each other to pass the time away.  Girls have better things to do with their time.

@SheilaD    unless the Marine outranks your son he could remind him the Navy owns the Marines.   If he is "out ranked"   he might want to remember that and just chuckle about one of the acronyms for Marines.

I guess even though they are part of the same branch of the service there will always be the rivalry between the two groups of who is better, Maybe it's a guy thing.

Thanks, Elaine L. and Hismom.  A marine that he met while working called his job being a 'dent monkey' and Thomas didn't really like that... or maybe it was the marine's superior attitude he didn't like!

yep,   fix the metal...  the pipes  whether it be  welding or plumbing, etc.  That is a Hull Tech specialty.  Mine has commented on the plumbing problems as part of his job  and something about water under pressure (not the incoming pipes)  and needing a shower after.   Hasn't mentioned a nickname.. but he has a really long last name.. so I'm sure he does have one.

@HisMom  which ship did your's get to?..sorry if you've mentioned it before sometimes I have short-timers

@SheilaD,  If I remember right  PIR is about 6 weeks after they start BC   IF they don't get delayed for some reason most of the ones' I've heard about are on a Friday..  good luck to your son.    IF they have not warned you.. all his personal possessions (clothes he wore when he left) will be sent back to you after he gets there. For some that "box" is traumatic, I was not warned about it among other things.  Write him daily or almost if you can... He won't get to write except one time a week.. so don't worry they appreciate the communication even if they don't return it right away.
