Good Morning, I agree with all the things Donna said about packages and deployments. One thing that my kids liked to receive in care packages was DVD's. (My son is subs.) I would mail an old DVD (Target has lots of them) and something that would have just come out on DVD. We also got them Nintendo handheld games, they used them a lot. My daughter, and son-in-law, live in Chesapeak. they have not problems getting to and from the different bases in the Norfolk area. It is a real nice town!

Ohio 51,,,,,My son was stationed in Norfolk, until last month. He lived in Chesapeake. He found it to be a good area and a easy commute.

Ladies.....Welcome to all newcomers.

If this is your first experience with your children being deployed here's one thing that you can do for yourself. Call the 1-800 number for the post office and order yourself a starter packet for flat rate boxes. They will provide you with everything you need to mail packages overseas or to ship's. Just tell them you need the flat rate starter kit for mailing to APO's. It is free of charge and they will send the packet straight to your house..

Hi all. It's great to see this group growing. But I also feel somewhat removed from the beginning newly commissioned Ensigns. My son commissioned 4 years ago starting with API in Pensacola, etc. He's now preparing for his first deployment sometime at the start of the new year. Now I'm getting really anxious. Anyway, while I don't know a lot, I'm always willing to share. Good luck to you.

Becky....Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Make sure you put several Shout wipe packets in your purse, you never know when you are going to need them with all those Whites around (that's if they are wearing whites). Also if your son's attentants are miltiarty, you might want to have a supply of gloves on hand for the guys, someone always forgets their gloves. We set up a little clean station for our guys, things like lent brush, shoe polish, button clips, polishing rag etc. Sometimes you don't need these things, but if you do you don't want to be running around trying to find things when you really want to be enjoying the wedding.

Best of luck!

Becky, Congratulations!! Be perpared at the wedding! As a Mother of the groom, we traveled half way across the country for my son's wedding back in '96, arriving two days before the big day. The wedding was small but beautiful. The bride looked as though she stepped off the pages of Vogue and my son was gorgeous in his dress whites. Both the moms wore Navy blue suits (what else!!) Of course, I wasn't expecting to break my ankle the night before the wedding, but thank goodness the walk to the front of the church wasn't that long! Timing is everything! Murphy's Law struck again! LOL

I also have dealt with this type of situation. I found it was much easier to give them a choice (with the same outcome). i.e. "Would you like to live with John or would you like to live with Jane?" Same outcome. And they feel as though they have a choice with what's happening with their life. Everybodies happy. It is so hard when your parents can no longer live on their own. Assistant Living is great if money is not an issue. The move alone is going to be very difficult since most elderly don't like major change. Sometimes, an "extended visit" with a family member might work out until they get used to the idea. (Two weeks here and a week at their our home, etc) Also giving them a choice..."Would you like to come for a visit for one week or two?" Then, after the visit, in a few days, ask again. It is amazing how well that works to get them used to the idea! Good luck. My prayers are with you.

Hi everyone... I feel like I've been gone a long time (bringing daughter back to college then dealing with the southeast rainstorm). Sorry, I missed so much of the current threads. Do you know a N4M group working specifically with your son's ship? Some of the groups are just doing a nice service of sending cards and goodies to those sailors that don't have any family sending them stuff. Another group of knitters pick a ship and then make bed covers for some of the sailors. I've been looking at these groups for ideas of things to send my son when he goes on his first deployment.

Coincidence or the water. I was searching for other families in my local Northern CA area and found another mom who is from the town next to mine. After we start pm each other, she informed me that her work place is right in my downtown. We didn't connect for weeks, I was getting lunch across the street and decided to drop in. Her son (2001) and my son (2002) graduated from the same high school one year apart. In college, the two guys both study engineering (my electrical and her mechanical) and are nuke officers on subs. My son joined the Navy one year before hers. They are both stationed in Pearl! We don't know if they knew each other in high school. There just aren't that many nuke officers to begin with. What are the odds of two from the same high school?

Hi, JJ. I thought the real estate expansion was on hold since the Japanese economy tanked 5 to 6 years ago. It seems like more people are going to the other islands. Perhaps Oahu is going down and other islands going up. We played golf at Luana Hills (it was going through some receivership or something) but the entire membership (350 or 400 members) had walked away from their memberships. This is a beautifully designed Peter Dye course and it was expensive to built. I couldn't believe it. It was rather sad. I personally prefer an out-of-the-way cottage over the hill but husband like the touristy breakfasts at the Royal Hawaiian (the breakfast menu was good butI suspect it is the same Y chromosome at work).
Trekkie Dad, can you share with us the name of your son's building and the family run hotel? If you prefer, please send me a private message. Click on my profile photo, go to my page and click on "send message."
