I am so happy that I am here with this group! I have taken some time to read the concerns and some questions that have been asked in the past. I have found that many had questions regarding the rates of their officers. A good way to find out what those numbers mean (that go along with that rank) is to google "Military Ranks" and it will list all the services along with the comparison, such as our Navy Lieutenant (O-3) is the same as the Army's, Marine's, and the Air Force's "Captain."
**The other thing that I thought was interesting was the discussion regarding the "pin ceremony" from flight school. Each ceremony is different depending on where it is held. When my son got his flight pin, I also recieved one from him. It was a custom that as each new student graduated, the family member that was most influential in his life was also presented with a pair of wings. I was so proud of him and I had NO idea that I, too, was going to get my wings.
***Someone had asked about the P-3's. That was the plane that my son flew on. He did a great deal of time on that plane and the instructors were so impressed with him that they tried their best to get him to teach. But he wanted to move on to bigger and better things in the Navy. Besides he didn't like the weather in Maine! Which I found much milder than in Minnesota!
**So, now, nearly 18 years later, he is a full Commander and has been talking about retirement in a few years. He has traveled all over the world and likes everything that he has done. Although I get very little information out of him (part of his job) I find out just enough to make me happy!
**We are so proud of him. Right now he is stationed in Norfolk, VA. He has been home from Afghanistan for a month, is married and has one daughter.

navymum......If you have your son's power of attorney, you can check on his providers of service. I know when my son deployed, his insurance carrier put him on suspended status, this was true for his phone carrier and some utiltiles, you just have to call and ask.

You may need to have his mail held or forwarded to you if he didn't make arrangements before his left.

What Navymomxxxy said also about making contact with your son's landlord is great advise, espiscially if he left his car at his apartment. Having the landlord make a check of thing is helpful.

Also if you son left in a hurry and purchased groceries before he left, you may want to make arrangements to have his frig cleaned out.

There are so many things to be done when they deploy and its even harder if they have short notice.
Best of luck to you.

Sandy is right about USAA - they are great. When my daugher was stationed out of San diego and on deployment, San Diego had huge fires which burned her apartment to the ground. Before she left, she had a Power Of Attorney made in my name. I was able to work with USAA and get her funding before she got back to San Diego. The day she got off of her ship, we were able to find her a new apaprtment and start purchasing furniture, clothes, etc. USAA was great!!

Beth hokiemom and Vegas Nona; My son graduated August 2005 from Auburn as commander of the NROTC unit. I was (and still am) so proud of him. We were just on campus May 7 and 8, 2009 for my son's best friend who also graduated from Auburn (a little later because he served in IRAQ first). And, he was commissioned into the Navy as well. His commissioning officer was ... my son! We had a great time and had an excellent dinner party at Provino's in Opelika just off I-85! ... "War Eagle."

Vegas Nona, He and his wife are now living near NAS Whidbey Island. He is putting in lots of time learning his jet, Ea 6b Prowler, and will have his first deployment sometime this fall. By the way, He and his wife flew in to Auburn in May. We were there also since his best friend is like a son to us. Now that my son's an officer (LTJG) he was able to personally commission his best friend into the Navy!

The Dolphin Pin is associated with submariners. They have to fulfill many qualifactions to earn their Dolphins.

Vegas Nona, Congratulations on your son's assignment. Auburn is an awesome university: beautiful campus and great football. My son graduated there in 2005 going through their NROTC program. Upon graduation he went into the aviation as well. Wish him luck and my prayers are with him AND you.

When my son was stationed in Hawaii, he rented a house with another officer from his ship. He did not seem to have any problems finding a house.

That is wonderful! Our daughter was in the reserves when our son was commissioned. She gave her little brother his first salute. It was a very special moment.
