oyce, like you, we're missing our son. It is harder since being stationed in WA. When he was in Mississippi, he was at least within the 350 mile radius to drive home to the Atlanta area (once we even got to see him fly into Dobbins Air Base. However, Washington to Atlanta exceeds the 350 miles so we cannot easily get together, and this was the first Christmas we celebrated without him. And, its gotten challenging for us to get to him. My husband has been out of work for 3 years and I just lost my job in December. However, we're using the last of our frequent flier miles to visit him in March. We are so looking forward to it!

Thanks Cathy for the info on the Serviceflagas.com website. I went to it and saw a few items I would like to own. I especially like the the cling decal for the car and also the gold necklace too. So glad you shared this with us all.

Hi Joyce and welcome! I'm new here, too and live in GA. My thoughts are like yours, too, on the importance of their work they are doing. My son and his wife are now stationed in Whidbey Island NAS, WA. That feels like a world away...at least diagonally across our country. He's been there and I have not seen him since the end of July. He's been in the Navy since graduating college (got commissioned on Monday and married on the following Saturday) 3-1/2 years now. He is a jet pilot and training for his current jet. While my oldest, I still miss him and he is still my baby! Will always be. I'd love to share stories with you!

There are as many successful marriages/relationships that survive the trials of being in the military. I know its really hard when your child is hurting, but let us not forget the successes.

Relationship break ups and making bad decisions on choosing a partner are not just a military thing, they happen in all walks of life.

As Vicki S stated we love to include those that are in our childrens life good, bad, or indifferent.

All we can do is be the shoulder they lean on in the good and bad times.

Gail.....I lived one of those weekends several years ago. Graduation from college, commisioning and wedding all on one weekend. I just remember getting on the plane and thinking I never have to do this again. Then my really smart husband leans over and say, watch our daughter will marry at the academy and we will have to do this all over again. That burst my bubble. Luckly our daughter has not had a serious relationship to date, so where ok for now.

My son got married in P-cola the weekend he was commissioned an officer after OCS. Yes July 3rd commisioning and wedding July5th. Not just a small wedding ...on the beach with the swordsmen in dress whites and a large sitdown dinner. Unbelievable. All is going great for them and their 3 yr old. But what a weekend. This was in 2004.

Sandra....When my son got winged ,he was in P'cola. There was a store there named Wings. They carried the 14K wings along with tons of other stuff for pilots.

Good Luck,
Jody

Shelly....I agree with you. We have gotten use to our children being gone, but when we can't just pick up the phone and talk with them, then the separation seems to deep.

I keep reminding myself that if my daughter-in-law can do it, so can I.

God Bless.

Helen.....Sorry our sons wedding was in 01. He did go on to the normal flight school route after that.

I do miss those USNA days.

Andrea....The winging is much different from graduation from college or the academy. The new pilots take care of everything, you just show up and watch. They usually have a soft winging, which is the night before the actual ceremony. Its very casual. The instructors talk about each pilot and then presents their flight suit patch to the new pilot.

The winging is a ceremony with a host and guest speaker. As each pilot get called to the stage, the family goes up on stage with their officer to see them get winged.

Then there is a reception after that and the new pilots arrange everything, nothing much for the parents to do but just be their.

After having to deal with an academy graduation and a wedding on the same weekend, this graduation was a breeze.
