Tara always wanted food, snacks, magazines. She was not into toys. Same goes for my son, and for him there is even less room on a sub.

Hi Arwen and Rdcryer, this is Michelle.  My son is going to USS Tortuga.  Which ship is your love one on?

Oh, to finish that last post (I didn't mean to hit enter), I stopped sending him mail. If he stops getting letters, maybe he will actually take the initiative.  I'm not counting on it, though. He's his uncle's nephew. My MIL tells me that my BIL went two years without contacting her - and that she finally had to call his command to contact him.

rdcryer, your son must be in the same group as my son, he's been in the same places (according to the Navy news sites - he never calls).

Chris is trying for the near-impossible, to get back into the school he was dropped from (IT). I heard the Navy changed that school entirely, from a 14-week school to a 2-year school! I'm not entirely sure why such a huge change, but it's still what he wants. He discussed a couple of other options (Seabee, gunner's mate), but once he got to his ship and saw what they really do, he decided those possibilities were not what he wanted after all.

The total lack of contact is hard, he simply doesn't call, he doesn't check his email or facebook, and I learned that he doesn't open mail. One of the few times he did call, he admitted that he had a stack of mail I sent him that he "didn't have time to read." If I know him, every off-duty minute is spent gaming (video or D&D) or watching anime/reading manga.

Misyu2, my son is also at Sasebo, which ship will your son be reporting to? You should check the Japan Moms group. Most of the ships also have groups here.

Hi, yes, my son is undesignated and now it is his 2nd week in GL after his PIR on 2/11.  He will come home after another week, then he will report to Sasebo, Japan in late March. ~ Michelle

Thank you so much. Y'all have been the most helpful out of everyone that I know! Even the people that I asked that are not on this site! Even my brother who was in the Navy lol:)

Yes, that's how it was for Tara also, and she went in as undesignated,
