Oh my goodness- I was just told about this group from another lady and my Son is just in his first week of basic and this is really discouraging!  He went in as a Seaman apprentice since he was already on delayed entry do to no jobs.  I am very proud of him no matter- I know he is going to try and switch as soon as possible but from what I'm reading may not be the case.. I will support him in what ever his choice is..

Even policeman, detectives, firemen, prosecutors and judges have to accept the fact that certain things are beyond their control.

I've seen E6's kick their junior sailors out of the shop because the CO was going to drop by and the deck had to be waxed perfectly. So the E6 waxed it with a sponge.

Indeed, as a petty officer, I've kicked junior sailors out of the shop because the deck had to be waxed perfectly before inspection. I've waxed it with a sponge myself.

After waxing it with a sponge ourselves, we don't let anyone walk on it before the inspection.

Sailors aren't supposed to trust the brass. They survive by not trusting the brass. LOL.

Grace, it depends upon whether they went in on the seaman, airman, or fireman option.

Thank you up and down. Delays at any rate are somewhat normal now that we have a volunteer military. As far as undesignated goes, my son went in as undes 21/2 years. Sometimes he would get frustrated as we do at any job. He was never made fun of though if anything he was told by most that undes is the way to go. When you do strike out and get your rate you carry a respect because you have worked in so many different aspects. You will most likely get a job you like and did not lock into not knowing what it all entails. He has been nominated 3 times for the Blue Jacket award and made it into the interview process this time. He is now 3CPO. There are always ups and downs that is life. Encourage and Celebrate your sailor.

I find all the comments helpful.  Even the ones I don't want to hear.  My sailor is experiencing delays that are out of his control and I am frustrated for him.  I think we can be supportive and acknowledge that this is tough and not good at times.  Maybe we can allow our sailors to be unhappy about it and also support their efforts to have a positive outlook and work for the best outcome possible.  I think they need a little of both a positive outlook and a determination to work for a rate.

I've had the full range of emotions just reading today's posts. I am really proud of the way you all have listened and responded to each other.  Our sailors are fortunate to have you in their corners.  This is a tough road even when things go just as we wish.

I don't mind allowing people who support our sailors a little grace here to vent and get things off your chests so it doesn't come out on your kids or jobs or yourselves.  I don't think you would be hurting for your sailors if you weren't compassionate and caring.  Nobody can be positive all the time, especially not when things hurt.  Mommas hurt for their cubs and hubbies.  It's just being human.

Thanks to Emi, TropikalParadize, Tammy, MyLAS and all the family members on this board.  Our sailors do an amazing service for our country.  You do too.  God Bless you all.

Whew!!!!  Ladies....what is going on here!!!!!

We should be on this site to support one another through thick and thin.

Some of us have experienced an unsuccessful journey with our kids in the Navy while others have had nothing but happiness and success.

But bottom line sympathize when needed and congratulate when that happens too!!!!

We don't know what the next couple of weeks are going to bring for our men and women in the military....there is a war a brewing!!!!!  Let's all stand united to help one another during our journey while our kids are in the Navy

MyLAS please don't leave us.....if there ever was a time that we all need one another....that time is now!!!!

And......If I ran the Navy, I would have it that all enlisted men & women start in undesignated!!!! Start from the bottom and work your way up.  That way no little shit on the ship would make fun of an undes or treat them like shit while they mop up or chip paint because they were once in their shoes.

The Navy is doing a great job of bringing sexual harassment to the forefront with zero tolerance.....well harassment of any form within the military should not be tolerated.

God Bless America!   United We Stand!!!!!!!!

Emi - I totally understand the frustration, and it is VERY hard, especially for us loved ones to continually be supportive, even though things are less than ideal.

Tammy - Thank you so much for the clarification...I also understand where you are coming from, and in general, it IS good advice!  With the navy, there are lots of other circumstances that come into play, however the general feeling of "keep going, don't let things get you down, keep at it" I totally agree with as well!  And I'm happy that it sounds like your son is having a better go at it than my husband did - I'm very very glad he has been picked up and I hope things will be OK for him.  I also realize tone is hard to pick up online as well, and its very easy to take things the wrong way in forum groups, especially ones like these when we are talking about our loved ones! (I'm definitely guilty of this!!)  So if I was being too touchy I am sorry as well!

MyLAS - Hello!!! Good to hear from you as well!  Gosh, I wish things were better for your son....the pushing and "squeaky wheel" tactic worked (to a point) for my husband, but it can also backfire like you are talking about where they just throw the paperwork in the trash....ugh...I wish I had some BETTER advice!  I so wish that there was something we could DO....that was one of the hardest things for me, being powerless to help.  I tried to stay positive as much as I could, but it was VERY hard when the system is what it is....anyway, I'm enjoying the dialogue on here and its good to hear everyone's experiences, both good and bad.

Ladies you all are correct. I was too negative. AND I know that your sailors are already in the undes and stuck.  I too wish there was a forum to alert others before they get to this "rating".  I vented not to hurt or upset any of you but in hopes that those who monitor these boards (and they ARE monitored) will  be aware of the situation with these sailors who wanted to "serve" are now stuck with.  It is not right.  They are pushed to this so hard so that they can have the labor force to do menial tasks.

Hi Tropickal!  Good to see you here.  I disagree with you about those who are the squeaky wheel and are in the offices all the time..My sailor has seen paperwork be filled out and before he left the office, the command has thrown it in the trash in front of him.

Someone in control needs to know how rotten this is.  They probably do and just don't care... that's just how it is for the "needs of the navy".

Anyway, I do wish the best for all of your sailors.  Please PLEASE PLEASE pray continually for them.  They are the ones who get the longest hours, most duty, last off the ship, etc.
My best to you all
