Hi Ladies,

AJ~ So sorry to hear about your nephew :( thanks for the advice though!  I will remember to tell my son when the time gets closer.

chrisb4james~ I'm so glad your son is seeing the world.  That was one of the reasons my son joined, to travel and see the world.  He is getting his opportunity!

We are starting to save for a trip to Italy in 2015, right after Christmas.  We are going all out this year cuz my son will be home for Christmas this year (the next two he will be there).  I already have the house ready for him. Deck the halls with boughs of folly! Thank God for fake Christmas trees (although I miss the smell of the real ones) with a scentsy pot it works well, and we get to enjoy it without the hazards.  We are counting down for his arrival :)  I am so relieved that the base in Sicily is a tight knit community, and the sailors are not alone during the holidays.  Next year will be difficult, my prayers are with those of you who have loved ones overseas this holiday season. May the Lord bless you all with His everlasting peace, comfort, and joy!

Auralei~ what is ABH? Thank you for your sacrifice...two sons serving, God bless you and your family!

To everyone serving many thanks for your sacrifice...I am thankful for you this Thanksgiving, God bless and keep you safe!

To all the new moms, please rest assured that no one is alone on the holidays. Actually the more friends your sailor makes the more invitations they will receive. The command is very good about that.

Our daughter just returned from 3 years in Sig and it was the best time of her life... so far. She is now are Newport News Shipyard, PreCom on the Bush. Several of her 'Sig family' will be relocating to Norfolk/DC area so weekend trips and visitors will be frequent.

There are 3 other points I must make.

1. Please, please make a serious effort to join your sailor in discovering Italy. You will never forget or regret it. Just set a date and save your pennies. We were fortunate to visit twice and would not trade that time for anything.

2. The last 3 years on this site has brought about many good tips and suggestions. Look back as far as you can. It will take some serious time but well worth it.

3. Please remind your sailors when their anniversary date approaches or change of duty station and all paperwork must be approved again, make sure the don't just hit APPROVE  and not read it over thinking all is well. Make the necessary changes.

Our nephew was in the Army for 18 years, was a divorced single parent and did not update his information and did not have a will. 15 days after he 'approved' his paperwork he was KIA. All of his insurance and even the right to bury his remains went to his former wife. We are now in civil court trying clean up what could have been a by-the-book process. We were able to bring him back to PA to be with the family however he left behind 3 children who don't know where they belong. So please remind your sailors.

Hello everyone -

My son has been in Sigonella for a little over a year now - he left the US for his duty station there (he's a pharmacy tech at the NAS hospital there) on September 11 of last year - kind of a spooky day to be traveling, but he made it over safe & sound and the trip was uneventful.  Before he went into the Navy he had talked about wanting to go overseas, and Sigonella is an ideal duty station for anyone who wants to travel, especially around Europe ( a passport is a must for such people).  Since his arrival in Sigonella, James has been to Germany (he played in an Armed Forces soccer tournament there); Barcelona, Spain; and earlier this month, to Denmark and Sweden (Sweden is the homeland of his former hockey idol) - in addition to the attractions in Italy.  He's doing all the traveling I've always longed to do but was never able to.  From his Facebook accounts it seems like he's made quite a few friends and is really enjoying his time there.

For those of you who are feeling anxious about your family members who have just arrived at Sigonella or who will be going there, I hope this helps to ease your minds - from their publications I've read on Facebook it seems like they have a very good support system for the personnel on the base(s) there and their families.

To Robin - I know it must have been so hard to leave Sigonella & the people who became like a second family. Hopefully you can stay in touch with them through Facebook, Skype, and other media - maybe even plan an occasional reunion get-together - but I know it's not the same as being there.

Hi Ladies~

Robin, my son is an MA with an E3 rating.  Thank you for easing my mind.  I am almost jealous of my son LOL, wish I could fit in his luggage :) You have no idea what a blessing you are by sharing your experiences from Sig with me.  I was telling Victor about you and the stuff you have mentioned so far, and it has helped him too, thank you Sweetie! Mt. Etna sounds awesome, can't wait to see it.  Is it true you can ski it in the Winter?  That would be so cool!!!

Auralei~ I'm glad your son is adjusting well over there.  My boy will be joining him next month :)  He is so excited. What command and rate is your son?

resq~ we'll have to stay in touch and let each other know what their son's are up to over there, hopefully they will get to know each other :) Where is he now?

Happy to see more ladies on this sight :)

When I know Victor's command in Sigonella I will share with you guys, ok!

God Bless You Ladies ~ Good Night!

my son is headed to sicily in January with his new wife. they are still looking into the housing and travel options. does anyone know where to find this info. he is still in A school and not getting the time to look into how to plan for the future

Wow, that would be hard to bond with the people over their then leave with knowing you may ever see them again.  Hopefully you will!  Like I told my Son, when God places special people in your life nothing will keep you away from them.  Though you may be separated by miles, you'll never lose touch.

My son doesn't have a sponsor yet, that I know of.  I don't know what command either, yet!  He does have his drivers license and is getting his passport as we speak.

I have researched Sicily a little and read a bit about Mt. Etna.  What do you have to share about it, lol???

Robin, Thank you for putting my mind at ease.  I have worried how my son will do being so far from his tight knit family.  Sounds like it will be just right for him.  He always has been able to meet and make friends easy.  He was down today when I talked to him.  The distance is getting him right now.  He has a girlfriend of almost two years who will be going into the Navy after she graduates High School this June.  He is feeling the reality of their relationship and the fact that they will not see much of each other for the next few years.  This is what I think was bothering him.  He will be home for two weeks during Christmas then right after he will be going to Sigonella.

What does PCS'ed mean?  And why was it the saddest day of your life?

Thanks for your advice and encouragement, I really appreciate it :)

rhobo61, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your daughter, soak her up!  I will be praying for your time together to be extra special :)

Robin, what does it mean to be sponsored onto base?  This is all new to me :)  Have you been?  Are there two bases on Sicily? My son is going to Cantina (I think that is right.)  I have a feeling I maybe asking a lot of questions so I apologize ahead of time :)

25Navymom, chin up Mama :) I hope your days fly by so the day you get to see your son gets here faster.  How's he adjusting?  You and your 9yr. old?

Aarons Mom, I bet you are sooooo excited for Christmas, I am and my son has only been away from home for almost 4 months.  However, we did go to his BC Graduation, but we only got hours with him before he had to leave for A school.  It is sure to be a blessed Christmas.

My daughter is headed over before Christmas.  I'll have her home for Thanksgiving but then she'll be headed out.
