Most of us have been posting discussions segregated by ship and division, but maybe we can get to know each other based on our PIR date--we will all be in Great Lakes on the same weekend.

This is what scares me!

Ok, I have a question. I don't want to put a damper on anything but I keep thinking about where our sailors will be after a school, when they are deployed. That really scares me. When my son first said he joing the Navy I was proud but nervous about boot camp. Now I feel like ...I know he is safe at boot camp, sure he could get hurt but but what about when he is in another country facing who knows what. I just keep thinking that as hard as this is now is it only going to get harder? Should I just not think about that? But it is hard to get that out of my mind. Does anyone have these same thoughts?

Dawn,
Just a quick question. Is there any possibility that Dom is addressing his letters incorrectly? I have 3 boys. . . and boys are boys. . . .and Joe asked me to print out his address book in address label form rather than the ususal address book form because he wasn't confident in proper form under duress. Maybe you could mail Dom a few address labels with your next letter, just to be sure. Tell him it's for his convenience in case he might take offense!

md1310 my son Mike is ship 13 Div 057. He is going to be staying at GL for A school. Is your son?
Has anyone from Ship 13 Div 057 made arrangement for PIR yet? It would be cool if we all stayed at the same hotel so we could get to know each other better and I would think that the sailors would know each other... or do you think that they would need a break from each other?

Hi,
I just got back from Sioux Falls (200 miles from Saint Peter, MN). Joe shipped today.

Joe was the only person shipping today, so he swore in alone. I taped it and intend to post it to his facebook page so his friends can see what's happening.I will be posting his address and letters to his page also.

We've had a good couple of days. He was sent off with prayers and blessings from church yesterday. The drive made for good conversation followed by dinner and a movie at the hotel. Today I hung out at MEPS and went to the airport for lunch with Joe before the flight.

I don't know what happens with frequent flyer miles earned on these flights--the airline said they would input the number--as far as the airline was concerned, Joe would earn mileage. Do you know?

We haven't had a call yet. I am so tired I can hardly think in complete sentences. Joe left in good spirits. The chief at MEPS got him all revved up about . . . . .

Joe just called. He sounded good. He said what he was supposed to say about the box and letter and next call plus he got an "I love you" in under the wire. Good!!!

Now I know I can sleep tonight. He's on his way!

My son left on Nov. 16 and I received his box Nov. 19 and the form letter on Nov. 22. I was surprised to get the letter, I thought it was early but I'm complaining! So hopefully everyone else should be receiving theirs soon.

I got my form letter today! My son is in Ship 13 Div 057. Graduation date of Jan 15. I am so excited I have the goose bumps! Does anyone else have the same?

Dawn, It is hard, but there is some tiny comfort to take from the silence--because if anything were seriously wrong you know you would be notified.

That said, I think you are being very brave. Keep up your spirits. And take comfort in the fact that Dom is a third done, soon to be half done.

We go to MEPS tomorrow with the flight out Monday. I'm not liking today very much. Right now I'm baking a huge batch of cookies for the trip. He doesn't belong to the Navy until he gets on that shuttle bus in Chicago, so if he wants to have cookies for himself and his mate-to-be on the way no one can stop him!

Hi. As an answer to a couple of questions posted earlier--we just returned from Joe's final visit with his recruiter and I had had some of the same questions.
The PIR date is established when a division is filled up; basically as recruits get off the bus, they form divisions of 80 (I think) people. So, some days a division doesn't get closed off so the group waits until the 80th person arrives, and then the PIR is set.

As for the grad and go question, our recruiter said Joe would not necessarily know until the morning of PIR when he will be scheduled to go to Monterey.

Thank you all for your SHOUTS from across the country.! You all really get it. We will all be fine. This is hard, but we will be fine. We raised these young people to do good work, and off they go. We will be fine.
