ProudNukeMom, you sound like so many of us here. Somehow the navy knows how to take our kids, many of them young people just drifting through life, and make them sailors, someone responsible, disciplined, and hardworking. For me the biggest challenge was realizing that my little boy didn't need me to oversee his every action. He needed me to be his cheerleader, his shoulder to complain on, (or celebrate with), and just to be the one person who would always accept him no matter what.

Meanwhile, one thing at a time. Boot camp first. It's truly transformative. Try to make it to PIR if you can. The military pomp is splendid and the emotion that I saw on my son's face was so touching. Be there for your daughter if you can. Did you find a PIR group for your daughter yet? Highly recommended. Don't hesitate to come here with questions that will come up along the way.

After boot camp, time enough to start stressing the school part. Then the rollercoaster really starts!

ProudNukeMom,  I agree with JayDee659.....my son did not think that boot camp was all that hard....just keep your nose down and don't show off. Yes, I was worried also, that is the official job of a "mom", but still I like to know what he was learning and doing.  I can't tell you how many times I watched every official and unofficial video or post about bootcamp life and experiences!!!  Hours and hours!!!!!  I am kind of glad that those kind of things are not available for Nuke A school and Power school....that stuff is boring anyway....not like fighting fires!   We loved the PIR in Chicago!!!!!  It was very moving even though I watched a bazillion PIR's that are on YOU Tube!!!!  That last call, "Liberty, liberty"   wow!  Best to you and keep coming here.

The Nuke that came to my bakery got a job here in Colorado  with GE.

My son wants to be able to transfer credits to finish up a nuclear engineering degree then go for a mechanical engineering degree. At this point he wants to re up. Would like to end up teaching in GC.

ProudNukeMom its been my experience that I'm more worried than my daughter.  She's there experiencing the reality and I'm here wondering what is happening.  I found that she'd call me from boot camp and mention something going on that I would think was a problem.  I'd worry and stew then the next time she'd call me it was done and over and she couldn't figure out why I was still stewing on it.  I've learned that my daughter is a big girl  now and can handle things and that all she's doing is sharing.  It's a hard reality that we're not there to over see and direct.  We have to come to grips with the fact that we've raised them right and now it's their turn to really fly.  Your son will be fine.  As for you, that's what this group is here for.  :)

I am still trying to help my son get ready to leave. He had been out visiting all of our family and still feel kind of lost on how to help him. Not sure if I am worried about boot camp or his schooling more. Or maybe just how much I am going to miss him.

Thanks Mark for that clarification on the "college credits".  It was a bit confusing.   My son would like to finish his college degree also.  Our daughter has a degree in electrical engineering and began her first 'real job' in May.  I think that anyone who could get through Navy Nuke School would be fine in an engineering program.  Best to you all.

Comment by Mark on January 28, 2016 at 10:38pm
B'sNukeMom- that is great news about the details of your son's discharge. Companies that hire nucs will treat your son pretty much the same as those who did all six years. As far as credits go, a handful of schools will apply his training towards a "Nuclear Technology" degree. That qualifies nucs for a lot in the workplace, but it won't be confused with an engineering degree; as a few have mentioned, nuc training doesn't get them any credit towards an engineering degree. Nuc school is tough but engineering is tougher.

From some of the college info I have seen on various Navy sites, Old Dominion will accept some of the classes .........

Life After Nuke - I like that!

CoTwin - it wasn't that he had to get signed up through the VA, I think it's just more that they will help him navigate the system so to speak!  And it sounds like there's a lot of different info out there....

Geez NancyJo - that's a bummer that no credits transferred for your SIL. I sure hope that some will transfer for my son but I won't hold my breath.

I'll look into that SlezaksMom - thanks!

My SIL went for a degree in nuclear engineering after being a nuke and nothing he did in the navy transferred. He went to the University of Missouri-Rolla, which is an engineering college. That was some time ago, however, but I believe it is true that it all depends on the institution.
