Lilo, I hope you feel better. Now that my sailor is married, I get more from my DIL. When I was on my son about not communicating, he said that is his wife's job. Wha?? Uh, no, you never stop being my son. However, the wife is much better.

PacNWmom, your visit sounds marvelous. I'm so glad. You will remember that trip forever and so will your sailor.

J's/S's, you never fail. LOL Yup, typical mom thoughts. Wouldn't it be great if we could just flip a switch and turn the worry off? I forget sometimes that you have 3 in the military. You are my inspiration, Sea Sister!

My 63 yr old sister told me recently that she just eats up the info she gets from me about my sailor. She says she wishes that she had thought of the military as an option when she was young. That just wasn't part of our growing up; never occurred to us. How lucky our children are! The sky's the limit!

Welcome to San Diego, USS Roosevelt! Hooyah!

Hi all - Happy Monday!

Oh all this talk about non-communicative sailors......

J's/S'smom - haha - your post had me laughing (in a good way!)....good thing is you've been through this before so you know the drill!

Just keep repeating (over & over & over again) No news is good news!

PacNWmom - sounds like you had a wonderful visit - Charleston is such a fantastic place to visit!  Please do share the AirBnB info up above.  The punctured sinus does not sound good - ugh....hopefully they can get that cleared up soon - poor thing :(

Beglish - my sailor did Proto in NY - he really liked it there.  Join the Ballston Spa group - not real active but there's some good info in the discussion pages regarding places to live.  One of the popular places is The Winners Circle in Saratoga.  Mine lived there & liked it.  Nice place, close to the reactor site.....they are very Navy friendly.

Hi - my son wasn't in regular contact and I asked him for a quick call or text on Sundays, anytime of the day he finds a minute, and he's started to be pretty good about it. I usually hear from him on his way to or from base to study. I try to limit questions about school and he always gives me his upcoming test schedule so I can do extra prayers that day, now doing power prayers for these intense exams!  They definitely know you are supporting them even if they can't respond, and it means so much.  My son  just got his orders for prototype and is going to NY, which I'm told has fewer requests so it worked out for him since family and girlfriend are in the northeast.  Hoping to meet some of you on 12/18!  Is there a way we can identify each other?  I hear there will be a lot of other grads.

Hey folks! I returned from my trip to NC and SC a few days ago, and have finally waded through all the comments on this wall that I missed while I was gone (I intentionally took a break from the internet and email while I was there). Y'all have been talking about some really great stuff, and have, as usual, been super supportive to those who need someone to lean on. I'm continually amazed at how awesome this group is.

I had a great weekend visit with my Nuke son last weekend in Charleston. We stayed in an AirBnB, which I highly recommend. It's a 1 bedroom apt. in the back of a guy's house. When I get a chance I'll post the link for it on the "Hotels, villas, other places to book for a visit" thread. It was about 10 minutes from both NNPTC and downtown Charleston, and very easy to navigate to each. It's literally 2 left turns from NNPTC. It was very clean, well laid out, and even had a hot tub in the yard (which was blissful, btw)!

We had a fantastic, very fancy ($$$) dinner at Brasserie Gigi on Market St downtown one night, then the next night went out to sushi near base with several of his friends. As usual he has chosen a really great group of friends, and it was wonderful to meet them. They had all just classed up to Power School about 10 days prior.

We spent a full day out at Patriots Point. My nuke loves Naval history, so he had a blast reading everything about every ship. To be honest, for me they all started to blur together after about the 3rd room of model ships with plaques of info. But I loved seeing the sparkle in his eyes, and listening to him tell me stories about some of the ships.

He recently had his wisdom teeth removed, but unfortunately the (civilian) dentist punctured his sinus when removing the top right tooth. It got infected and he had been struggling with it for over 3 weeks when I saw him. He didn't look like he felt bad, but he told me his "face hurts". Last Monday they sent him to an oral surgeon, who opened it up and cleaned it out. He says (well, texts) he's feeling much better.

I miss him like crazy, but I know he's happy and thriving where he is. I'm so proud I can hardly stand it. <3

The lack of contact with mine has actually made me better about calling my family.

Comment by Lilo54 on November 22, 2015 at 11:41pm

Thank you so much for all the words of encouragement on the lack of communications from my sailor.  Its nice to know that I am not alone in dealing with this non-communication thing.  My husband thoughtfully put things in perspective for me.  We are all spoiled because we live in a day when cell phones are most common and we can easily communicate with our loved ones (when they want to).  He said that back when he was in college, his parents were lucky to hear from him twice during the semester.  He only called for a holiday (calling was very expensive).  But, he was not very good at writing letters either.  So, there was even less communication than there is today.  So, I guess the bottom line is I should be happy that I get a two line text once in a while!  Also, he told me that I have to be prepared for no communication once he is deployed - especially since he has volunteered for submarines.  Ahh - I love my husband - the voice of reason - I guess but doesn't mean I have to like it :(

hello all!!l

lilo--I know it is hard to not hear from you sailor.   I don't know if this will help any, but I always think that "no news is good news" .  I always told myself while my son was going thru nuke school that if he didn't text or call for awhile then he was just working hard and doing his best.  you are encouraging him and he knows that no matter the outcome of power school, you will be proud of him.   ill be praying for him!
