Lilo54 -- Power school was the toughest part for my nuke. And the last half? Well, I actually got in the car and MADE him see me. He was really focused on his studies and I got all the "too busy" messages, too. We went to dinner and he tried to talk to me about the feeling not good enough and the fear of letting "everyone" down, but what I said and the normal comforts didn't help & ended up frustrating him.

I met him briefly at the Subway there by base -- because that's all he had time for -- and he gave me.a big hug. I sorta whispered in his ear, "I don't know anything about the Navy and what you're going through, but I know YOU. You're smart and you're dong your best; that's all anyone can expect of you -- including yourself! I love you and you will never let me down, but I know you can do this. I will help anyway I can. If I have to come sit with you at the subway every weekend between now and graduation, then I will." By this time, we were both crying, but he seemed to get a little better.

My advice is to send him snail mail, email, or go if you can -- but make sure he hears you when you say that you know he's a good person, a hard worker and is going to make it. That you're a fan. That even the in the fleet class placement doesn't mean anything -- they're all nukes. Be his light in the darkness and let him know that you're not judging him.

Just need to unload a bit.  I'm worried about my sailor who is in Power School and is suppose to graduate on Dec 18..  We hadn't heard from in since the end of October.  I sent him a message yesterday that we missed him.  Got a two line reply back that he is sorry but he is having a hard time struggling and spends a lot of time in the building.  I have seen posts on FB about sailors in his power school class that know where they are going to Prototype.  He said nothing about prototype. Should I be concerned that he hasn't shared that or that maybe he's worried about not graduating?  I'm sure I am over-reacting but I worry about him.  It also doesn't help that he can't come home for Thanksgiving.  It will be one year since he left for boot camp this Wednesday.

Sorry to all who are on diets of one kind or another. Yes 1proudmama, you would have to pick off all the croissant and eat the insides. The basil and cheese. Tomatoes have carbs.

Yeah makes sense about the weekends and holidays counting, because they work those days if not on leave.

I do have my red on. And I have two deployed right now.

If I remember correctly some get off the week before and some after. I think my boy was after his stayed on the 27th. And yes they are charged entire days of leave even if holiday time is in there.
Co twin I'm on a low carb diet all your great posts are killing me, but I'm very proud and happy for you!

KYNavyMomma - I guess I should have clarified that that's how it was when my son was there!  This being the Navy and all it's subject to change at any time lol!  Your sailor should definitely be able to get the info from his/her SLPO though.

B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM, I have heard from several Nukes and parents that they are able to take the entire 2 weeks of leave at Christmas stand down. How is it determined that some only get 1 week or the other?  This has me curious.

Comment by Mark on November 20, 2015 at 11:42am

Peace, your daughter's info about weekends is not correct, unfortunately.  The unique thing about military leave time is that weekend days and holidays during their leave period are charged against their leave balance just like any other day.  If they're off 17 days, they will be charged 17 days of leave regardless of holidays and weekends.

Hi all - Happy RED shirt Friday!  I've got my red on, how about you? ;-)

Peace - Some will get the first week off & others the 2nd week off.  They have to have people there standing watch at all times....My son was told not to worry about going in the hole because they are in school long enough that it all works out!  I would imagine that soon she should know about time off....and she will have to put in a leave chit for it.

Hi all,     My daughter just got to GC on 11/14.  She is in indoc.  She is an EM.   Can anyone tell me how the shutdown over Christmas works?   Do they all get the same time off?  I think she told me that the weekend days are not counted towards leave.  They are off 17 days so that would mean they need to use 11 days.  I know they can go in the whole but do they have to?  Also does Christmas and New Years count as days they need to count or are they not counted?  This would leave her with needing nine days?   Hope this makes sense I know it's long and confusing.  Thank you.
