Hi Nuke Moms,  I just typed up a big paragraph and lost it....silly me!  ;-)

This newbie Mom has a question.  What is a MM?  I have been seeing this on allot of posts and not sure what it means. I have one of those boys (Sailors) that has handled this entire Navy recruit process on his own so all I know is that he is going to the Nuke school in SC and is super excited about it.  I asked him this last Sunday how he was doing and if he would graduate at the top of his division (because if you knew him, that is what he would do) and he said to me "I am laying low because I can't rank up".  Okay, well that doesn't sound like my son but I trust he knows what he is doing.  Does anyone know what he meant by that.  I have never heard the words "I can't" come from his mouth so just curious what he means by this.  Can one of you wonderful, informative, experienced Mom's help me with what I am to expect in Nuke school and what my son is talking about?  Thanks!!        Oh, and I LOVE this group.  So helpful and informative!  Greatly appreciated.

Thank you, jurisprude! I just googled STA-21 and found the Navy site. Very helpful, however, I did not see a group to join. My son is hoping to be MM at nuke school, too.

Binker & Bro mom: didn't mean to leave you out of my previous post.  Your comments are very helpful and funny, too!

Hi Tallymom.  Just received a letter from my son at BC who reports that he has been assigned MM.  I'm considering changing my username to MMomager!  He says that he is very happy and excited about the designation because of the quick opportunities to rank up.  FYI, there is a STA-21 group that has a ton of great information on the application process and entry qualifications for that program.  In that group there is a link to an official Navy link.  I'll try to find and attach, or someone more high-tech might want to jump in.

Co-Twin: you crack me up.  Thanks for the regular laughs from a fellow native (Texas transplant).

B'sMom, I find your comments extremely helpful.

Hi All - Happy Friday!  I've been having computer problems this morning - IT people are in so I only have a quick moment to jump on & say hi....great news on the recent grads, slezaksmom - happy you will see your son soon.  Congrats to the sailor who was picked for STA-21 - that's awesome.  Getting ready to head out to college son's cross country race.  Hopefully they will be done with our computers when I come in on Monday.

Hope you all have your RED shirts on today!

Have a great weekend!

Congrats pink! My son left for bootcamp two days ago. His next stop will be nuke school in GC. He really wants to go on and get his bachelors degree after that. I did not know about the STA 21 - that sounds like exactly what he wants. Do you, or does anyone, have any more information about this? I am with jurisprude and want to know more, words of wisdom, advice, etc.

Congrats pink! That is wonderful. The Navy has so many opportunities to take advantage of and that is a great one to get in to. BZ to your son.

Congratulations Pink to you and your son. I am happy for his success!  My son will soon graduate from bootcamp and is headed to GC for nuke school next.  I am curious in your opinion what all traits, accomplishments, attitudes, etc. were instrumental in your son's selection for STA-21.  Obviously my son will have to make or break it on his own, but any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated at this stage to help keep him on the best path.

Comment by BunkerQB on October 17, 2014 at 1:42pm

Dear pink, congratulations. We know a young man who was selected for STA 21 more than 13 years ago. He joined the Navy right out of high school (family didn't have funds to send him to college). He re-up near the end of his 5 years and used his "shore time" to get an MBA from a very prestigious university in the West Coast. He'll stay in the Navy at least thru 20 years (he'll still be in his late 30s). He is not sure if he'll join the civilian ranks a that point but he will have an incredible education and career accomplishments. If you can get in, this is one heck of a program.

I am so excited for my son!  He just found out that he was picked up for the STA-21.  (Sailor to Admiral).  In a condensed explanation, he will be paid by the Navy at his current rank to attend college for nuclear, then he will serve 5 years as an officer in the USN.  I am so proud!!!  I think it's kind of like an ROTC program for those who are currently in the Navy and want to become an officer.  There were only 50-some sailors in the entire Navy that were selected this year.
