One year ago today, I very proudly (but with tears too) watched my son start this new and exciting chapter of his life.  I've been on this site longer than that, and really appreciate all the support, information, and connections here.  GO NAVY (AND MOMS)!

We too pick up the tab on many things - plane tickets, dinners, odds & ends.  When we retire, it'll stop.

At the same time, I see over and over again parents paying for things for their kids when their children should assume financial responsibility. One of my sisters has continuously written huge checks over the years - wedding, divorce, purchase of home.  Unfortunately, this is going to have a big impact on her & husband's retirement. So maybe it's better to let them assume responsibility as soon as they can.

I too buy my sons tickets, but I am very lucky not to find this a financial burden.   I also recognize that many parents are not so fortunate and I feel very blessed to be able to do this for my son.  We all love our children and just do what we can when we can.

SoCal Salior Dad  I hope I didn't offend. I didn't mean to. So many on Navy4Moms buy their sailors tickets and I sometimes wonder if I am being a big meanie.

I hope I'm not sharing to much correct me if I am. Reactors are shut down for scheduled routine maintenance all the time called outages in private sector. Was just going to connect with other moms who's adults are starting class same time as mine potentially.
Comment by Mark on August 13, 2014 at 5:17pm

@WearsLargeHats - that is a good question.  I'm confident the discussion below is OK.  All reactors need periodic maintenance on primary and support systems, and much of that maintenance can only be done when the reactor is shutdown.  OPSEC would come in if specific work was discussed, or if schedules were discussed - "up and running this fall" is vague enough to not be a problem, but I wouldn't recommend being any more specific than that.  It could also be an OPSEC issue if someone were to say that the reactor was shutdown because something was "broke" (technical nuc term, lol).  This would be different from what is mentioned below, which doesn't suggest anything more than a routine maintenance shutdown.  Regarding qualifying, there are many signoffs that must be done during a shutdown period, so as NancyJo said, qualification progress can still be made.  Finally, assignment to specific prototypes has nothing to do with rate, or sub/surface designation.  I wouldn't be surprised if married students were more likely to stay in GC to help control relocation expenses, but that is only speculation, and I'd be even less surprised to hear that marital status doesn't matter either.  The main factor is getting trained nucs to the fleet as expeditiously as possible.
