Look on the US Red Cross Website.

The process is very simple.  Line up a doctor or minister that the Red Cross can call to confirm details.  Open a case with the Red Cross by telephone.  If it is a mother, father, or grand parent that was key in raising the Sailor it is a no brainier if the surgery is something the parent might not survive ( at least that is my understanding - in our case it was a terminally ill Grand Mother ).

It is all done by telephone and fax ( maybe e-mail these days ).  Red Cross verifies via telephone, Red Cross approves it meets military requirements for emergency leave, and notify's the commander's staff by telephone with a follow up fax.

Sailor is called in and told to prepare his travel plans as soon as the command is aware.  Having the sailor alert the command clerical staff that an emergency leave request is coming from the Red Cross does not hurt, but it may, or may not help the process.  They can advise the sailor on how the process works on their end and help him prepare.

Making airplane reservations last minute can be expensive.

From what my sailor who is deployed says there is more to the coins tradition wise, that mom's might not like so much.
I asked another N4 M friend who's son went through SERE what I could tell you, will answer you when I hear from her.

No, cybermom, my stepdad is doing a wonderful job. Someday I'll tell you all about him. He's a Vietnam era Marine and a saint. I wish I could clone him for all us singles.

On the Challenge coins, if your sailor wants you to, buy them. If you want them, buy them.
My son is only interested in the ones he gets from Navy superiors. He says then try men something to him. Your choice!
