I spent the weekend visiting my sailor son in Charleston this weekend and had a wonderful day on Saturday. After we brought him back to base, we learned that my MIL had died that evening. I am so very very thankful that we were here to be with my son and spend one more day with him to be sure that he was ok. We all decided that it would best for him to skip his grandmother's funeral in order to stay focused on school, but I know he wants to be there. Such a hard decision for a young person. It was so great to see him, to have some idea of where he is living, to give him his truck so he can have a little more independence, and to spend quality time together. It was not easy to say goodbye .... I guess it never will be.

Darsatm- your sailor will ask you who is coming because they have to have your names at the gate. There is no limit to how many people can come, it's a very intimate graduation, lasts about 30 min. Few people attend, we had 6 members of our family come, loved it! While it is very different from PIR and Power School graduation, I still loved it! It's held inside in the Rickover Auditorium.

Hello,

I have a sailor in BC graduating 8/30/13  He is in the Nuke program.  Are ther any other Moms that have this in common or have sailors in S. Carolina already?  I was wondering in anyone knows when he will leave for A school if graduation is on a Friday before Labor Day on Monday?  Any help is appreciated.

do we need to get approval to get on base for A school graduation like we did for PIR?

and if so ...is it our sailors responsibility to do so?

and is there a limit to the number of guests?

the sailors who are staying in IL get liberty for the weekends when that Monday is a holiday, but it does not apply to the sailors who are flying out.....

chrisjoshuasmom, you can go to the airport with your son and wait and sit with him until he flies out. My son was originally leaving at like 12 am, but then called us and said it was changed until 7 am. We headed out to the airport (using Sarges shuttle/cab service) and arrived at the wonderful USO at the airport, where we found out his flight was delayed again until later Sat evening. We went and got security passes so we could accompany him to his flight gate later and then took off for Navy Pier (can ride the train from the airport) and the rest of my family joined us and we had a wonderful day with him and another sailor. Then we got to go sit at his gate with him until they left. You just never know. He will have his itinerary at PIR or shortly after, just make sure you are ready for anything!! you can take his cell phone, laptop, etc to the airport and give those items to him also. My son also requested some boxer briefs and I took 2 pair...he and his friend both promptly went into the restroom and changed out of the "whites'. Happy boy!! LOL
