NCNarrator -- congrats to your sailor ... and I'm thrilled to know there is a possibility that my sailor will be able to come home on the day he graduates in September!  Enjoy your time with him!

Congrats to your son NCNarrator.  How exciting for you guys and good luck finding the right car for your son.

Our sailor graduated from A School today!!

He'd told us that graduation was at 2pm, so we'd planned to leave at about 8am so that we would get there plenty early.  Then, last night he called to tell us that graduation was at 9 AM!!  Oops!  So we left the house at 3am this morning...but it was worth it!

I got pictures of everyone!  Best of all, our sailor got to come home with us.  We're so excited to have him home for the next little bit, and we get to help him buy a car (if we can find one he likes).

My son is in A school -- class 1338A -- and "phased up" today!  I'm so glad for him.  We are driving his truck to Charleston next weekend so he can have his wheels and we can visit him.  I can't wait to see him and I'm sure he can't wait for us to bring some more civilian clothes to him!

hello all!!

talking about the food at goose creek. my son said it wasn't too bad, but when he started school by the time he was done with school and study time, the kitchen was closed for dinner.    of course he had to do a lot of study hours.   I would send him granola bars, cans of ravioli, and such.

Comment by William in Nashua on July 12, 2013 at 4:09pm

About the food, my son's opinion is the submarine cooks are the best, followed by the galley his at Groton submarine base, then boot camp.  Rounding out the pack is Goose Creek.    The cooks on his boat all got sent to an extra cooking school recently so they should be all master chefs when they return Lol.  It was C school for cooks or some special school.

1proudmama my son wanted to go directly to the fleet on a Virginia class sub, he got his wish, started on his boat in mid-January after graduating prototype and taking the 30 days of leave.  By mid-March he had qualified one of the major reactor operator watches (not sure what the name is) and also passed the advancement exam for E5.  Now he is an E5 without having to reenlist, has 2 more reactor qualifications completed and believe he is less than 2 months away from finishing his dolphins too.  The boat has been in drydock for a few months but it won't be for long.  He is working on the boat every day Lol.  They are too busy to send him out with some other boat.  He is very happy with his assignment.

william you are absolutely right about staff pick up. My husband has an old navy pal over prototype actually just came commander and he gave my son some pointers and one was don't become a staff pick up. Another good tip was if you get a choice choose a ship that is not going to home port for refueling. That equals down time yes but in beginning you want to qualify, qualify, qualify. Can't do that when the ship isn't at sea. He said in Nuke world qualifying is more important then stripes. Other guy might have more stripes, but if you have more things that you qualified on you are their superior. And boy can that be nice. :}

baciandrio- my family and I just went down with 2 other navymoms from st. louis. We had an RV stayed at foster creek RV site and they stayed at the villas right next door. It was nice when they arrived a few days later to have a full kitchen to cook in! We went to Isle of Palms beach. More of a if you have a beach rental house there kind of beach. luckily it was a rainy on and off day so we found parking. Most days would be a problem. Went to Folleys beach and we parked over by the pier had to pay $15 but very little walking to beach they had plenty of parking sites. If you went further to the right where you can only go left or right you can find free parking up that way but won't have bathroom facilities. Both beaches nice Isle of Palms more secluded, folleys typical beach.

Here I go, catching up again. I had volunteered to be the admin for this site and find that I don't have the time to devote to it. I'm barely keeping up.  Would someone else be willing to take the reins?

My son is staff in NY and decided to do that for personal reasons. But as far as after navy life, he will still have sea duty, he had to reenlist for the 2 extra years, so he will be no worse off than any other sailor. Your chances after service are largely dependent on those personal qualities mentioned earlier, what your drive is, and what your willingness is. All our sailors will have decisions to make along their navy journey that won't necessarily match someone else's. They all will go their own way.
