hello all!!

baciandrio---welcome!!

AJs mom--if you are looking for something with a kitchen that is close to base, you could try the foster creek villas. they are beside the foster creek rv park. your sailor will have to reserve them for you though.  just a suggestion!

Either my son is just overly nice or there is something weirdly different with his experience. I am a chef and so he comes from good food. He told me the food at GC is great! He enjoys it a lot. Says there is a good amount of choices and the quality is good. He likes it better than boot.

@Baciandrio -- Welcome!  My son is in class 1338M.  Enjoy your visit!  When we visit in December we'll also look for a place with a kitchen so my son can enjoy some home cooking.

Hi All, first post in this group.  My adopted SR arrived June 8th & is in class 1338A. (Sorry, yes I've been lurking!) Looking forward to my first trip to GC and Charleston for that matter mid August.  I've rented a lovely house in Old Charleston for the 6 days I'll be there so that I can least cook him a few good meals. (Galley food is his one and only complaint.)  Haven't seen him since he PIR'd in June although I do see him on skype almost nightly.  I do have one question...I'd like to spend a day at the beach....so any recommendations on which one and tips?  We're intending to go on the Sunday but he'll have to put in his study hours first thing in the morning.  I don't want to pack up the car and drive to a beach only to find that we can't get even get a parking spot!  Thanks and have a great day.

The part about teaching at prototype reminds me of the old joke about sweepstakes prizes. First prize is a one week vacation in Bayonne, New Jersey. Second prize is two weeks vacation in Bayonne, NJ.

It is interesting that they market the idea of becoming a staff pickup at prototype appear as some sort of plum assignment to students who are still at prototype. But to sailors in the fleet, teaching at prototype is considered undesireable shore duty.

It seems like best shore duty for nukes is a civilian job after the Navy. Lol.

dbilyou  My son is in nuke at GC.  He is hoping for Pearl Harbor, mostly sub duty though I think.

Yes, I so so so agree with you about social skills and their interaction abilities- it's not an easily, if at all, learned trait!

Ah thanks!  That definitely makes sense to me.  And those are about the numbers I was thinking too.  I wonder if out of 100 how many volunteered that did not get chosen?  I would really prefer to stay in Charleston right now with my career, so if my sig other would get staff pick up- that would be ideal.  Also, probably "people they like" translates into all those qualities that you described.  I don't think you would stand out as someone that is popular with the higher ups if you lacked those things!
