Mrs. Woody- I don't know if I'm crying for you or for your Sailor. Thank you for sharing such an inspirational story of strength and determination. I hate the thought of any of our "kids" falling down as hard as yours. But we all know that it happens sometimes. Kudos to you for standing by your Sailor and supporting him. Also, kudos to him for getting right back up and fighting for his dream. My son once said to me, "consequences suck but without em, I wouldn't learn anything". I'm sending many prayers of strength and encouragement to both you and your Sailor. Please keep us updated on his future with the Navy and let him know that we are ALL very proud of him.

Mrs Woody - thank you for sharing this with us - I'm sure it took a lot but I for one appreciate the info and yes we will be praying for your sailor and your family.  Hang in there and continue to be the supportive mom that you have been!  We are all here for you :)

Mrs. Woody, thank you so much for your honesty and articulate posting sharing your difficult situation with this group.  You are teaching us all by your example, and your son will certainly be stronger because of this experience.  Stay strong and remember to take care of yourself.

Fellow Moms: I want to share a topic with you all: Captain's Mast, something I had never heard of before sending my child to the Navy. Can also be referred to as Non-Judicial Proceeding (NJP). Unfortunately, I have learned more about this subject than I care to know, but I also wanted to share some of what I have learned with you because I couldn't find much in the few last few months of searching Facebook groups, Navy for Mom's, Google, you name it – I searched it! Captain's Mast can be for many things, most common are underage drinking, drugs and DUI. There are no limits as to what can be covered but the consequences can be career changing. However, Captain's Mast in certain circumstances can be a good thing (but usually not).

My Sailor went to Captain's Mast for UA (unexplained absences – 20 minutes late for muster) and a few other "minor" things, but put together warranted enough for Mast. I found out about Mast only a couple days before and once it happened went almost 2 weeks with no communication. For my Sailor, the "award" was 45 days restriction (moved to a "sterile" room, i.e., no phone, no TV, no computer, no extras – just basics, like in Boot Camp), fine of $500/ month, for two months, and reduction in rank.

I went through many stages of "grief."

1) DISBELIEF;

2) DENIAL – as I talked very little with my Sailor and only received spotty information, I thought "that's not fair" and "why is the Navy doing this" (based only on the "discretionary" info Sailor shared while in restriction);

3) FAILURE – where did I go wrong as a parent;

4) EMBARRASSMENT (which is why I never posted before);

5) ANGER – how could Sailor do this; and now, finally,

6) ACCEPTANCE , which I think is the best one and only achieved after pulling more details from my Sailor and combing those with information found through my searches – Navy lingo is tough sometimes. As a Mom, I didn't have any part in this happening and there was no way I could have prevented it from happening.

Now Sailor is getting a grand dose of consequences for actions by being removed from the Nuke program and is probably going to be sent to the fleet as undesignated (i.e., no rate). While this breaks my heart (Sailor's dream has always been to be a Nuke), "Navy Needs" for the Nuclear field do not include someone that wants to bend or stretch the rules. Thankfully I think Sailor finally "gets" it and has gotten to the acceptance stage. Sailor has requested to be reinstated in the Nuke program (grades were great) but has a 50/50 chance. Unfortunately, because of the NJP, doesn't get a choice if re-rated. It will strictly be "Navy Needs." Sailor's plan of action is to be outstanding and volunteer for anything and everything. I hope and pray that Sailor succeeds!

My plan of action is supporting my Sailor. Helping and encouraging to "Stay Strong, Stay Positive and Stay Proud" (I had put that in every letter throughout Boot Camp). Now that privileges are returned I send a daily inspirational message, always followed with an "I Love You." To date, I've always gotten a "love u 2" response.

I'm not posting this for pity – I don't need or want a pity party – not my style. I'm posting this in hope that it will help someone, some day (thus getting to the "acceptance" stage).

My apologies for this being so long but since I was unable to find the info, I wanted to put this out there for others who may be going through it and afraid to say anything (like I was). I felt very "alone" (but for my lifeline, a fellow Navy Mom who helped me ascertain "official" info and helped me get through the multiple stages of grief).

Sailor is currently awaiting decision of the Navy as to fate.  Prayers are welcomed and encouraged.  Thanks for "listening."

Cathy, I sure am glad that your son had a sword with him and that he has so much coordination to be able to swing in trees with a sword in his mouth!  LOL

good morning all!!

my son has seen Charlie too!

my husband, brother-in-law, and youngest son has seen (not to big) alligators at the pond or swamp over by the foster creek RV park.  there is a pond there that sets down in back behind the rv park where you can watch for them.   they went down around 9 at night and sat there till they saw them.   this was in earlier this month.   I stay at the villas!!   if you go to cypress gardens, you can take a self guided tour on the row boat and see alligators swimming around you.  I don't think they are very big either.  at least not the ones I saw from SHORE!!!!
