My son will be heading to GC on Sunday. He is thinking about going to subs. Can anyone tell me where the prototype school is for subs?

My guess on when BAH becomes effective is the day he formally checks out of the Barracks, but that may take a while to show up in the pay check, anyway I would guess it will eventually catch up.

The on base PPV housing required some up front money that they allowed him to put on a credit card, he also signed papers that allowed his portion of the rent to be paid by allotment out of his pay check. Sorry I do not have any details on what amounts or type of costs he had to put on his credit card.  But my husband told him it was much better deal that any private land lord would give him.

When moving into a house, they do get an advance for incidental expenses of setting up a household - of something like $1,000.

Bad news is after prototype when single guys are moving out of a house back to the barracks they are expected to have no incidental expenses - and they get nothing.

Not the same for married Sailors of course - they will not be moving back into a barracks.

OK, I had a shock just now, but everything is good.

There was a nice neat stack of LES statements in my Sons night stand drawer.

The 894 amount must be an old number.

The first two months of receiving BAH after transferring to the prototype command about a year ago were weird.  8 odd dollars the first month and over 1200 the next.

Then it was very regular.  960 per month for the rest of 2012.  Went up to 1002 starting in January 2013.

Hope that helps.

hk,

          That is an excellent question.

My son was receiving BAH at the unmarried rate for January, February and part of March at Goose Creek.

Not sure I will be able to find one of his Leave and Earnings Statements, but if I can I will post the amount.

The just under 900 number sounds like a number that was kicked around in the past.  But that is the kind of thing was kick around over two years ago.

I do know that my son had a three bedroom house on base with another sailor (both single) they both made money on the deal, and when the other Sailor's proto-type class graduated 30 days earliar than my son's, the other Sailor moved out, and they dropped the rent to my Son's BAH amount, but based on my recollection either the 900 or 1,000 dollar amount could be correct.

Let me see if I he left an old LES laying around, he had to print one out to get a tax exemption on the new car he bought in South Carolina, so maybe it is still here.

Also, if my bf gets his official orders on May 10 to report, when will he receive his bah?  The first paychech of next month?

Comment by hk1853 on May 6, 2013 at 3:51pm

Thank you for the response!  I did check the calculator earlier and it said 1002 but the reason I asked is because he seems to think it was 894, he's been insisting they've been told that.  I was just wondering if anyone else recently has only gotten the 894, but no biggie!  Oh and I am from NY but I am living in charleston right now :).

hk,

I noticed your profile indicates you are in NY    FYI, the BAH calculator uses the zip-code because there are a few zip codes where the military provides an " add  on kicker for high cost of living areas".  These military bases are few and far between.

One my husband mentioned, and he is old like me so this base is now closed, was the Presidio in downtown San Fransisco ( I believe that s the city it was in).

Anyway, if there are bases in some of the higher cost of living areas, say New York city, they might receive a kicker.

Goose Creek is closer to the U.S. wide norm for housing costs.   Much more modest housing costs than say New York City or the urban areas of Southern California.    However the official BAH calculator requires you to identify the area the housing will be in by zip code, or other means to work.

hk,

Search the Internet for the official  military BAH calculator  for 2013,   locate the zip code for Goose Creek, South Carolina, and figure out what pay grade the Sailors will be at after they graduate Power School and you will have your answer.

Hint, Assuming they do not receive some kind of punishment for bad behavior ( under age drinking for example ) in A school or Power School they will be the lowest grade Petty Officer, except for the tiny minority who refuses to accept the promotion after A school ( Accepting promotion requires the Sailor extending their enlistment from four years to five years - which means next to nothing since they must extend the enlistment to six years total if they complete both Power School and Proto-Type in addition to A school - and few plan for failure :)  ),

The blanket promotion to Petty Officer  ( Non-Commissioned Officer ) nine months after enlistment  is unique to the Navy Nuke training program, to the best of my knowledge.

Nuke A School FAQ group on Navy For Moms can help you figure out the pay grades, ranks, rates and ratings,  and what they all mean.

how much is their BAH during prototype for single sailors?

Comment by joyfulmom on May 5, 2013 at 9:22pm

Janet - My son said it is better to wait until he is in A school because he needs to have a sticker to park his vehicle on base. He will not have the security clearance to go get the sticker until he gets into A school. Hope this helps!
