My son will have PIR on June 7 and then be headed to SC.  I know that he can't have his vehicle for about a month and his A school may not start right away, but can his vehicle be parked on base while he waits for authorization to drive it?  I'm trying to plan the best weekend to bring it to him and I need to know if I can bring it early.  Thanks!

Thanks for that info, NF Mom. My sailor will probably be getting married within the next year. Guess I'd better start researching!

My husband, who is former military, warned me about giving advice to people about housing, moving and marriage in the military.

There is a wrong way, a right way, and a military way to move wives and rent houses.

Doing it the right way the military will pay for your move and most of the cost of you driving your cars and most ( perhaps all ) of your costs of setting up a household.

If you get in a hurry and do not follow the rules it will cost you both money and in a worse case damage a military career ( all though that is apparently unlikely ).

Example: my son received somewhere in the range of $1, 000 to $1,2000 dollars as compensation for the incidental expenses of setting up a household, and he was not even married.  That payment would be in addition to moving and other expenses.

Sailors must get permission from their commanders to get married, or even to bring their wives to their base and live with their wives.

The permission is almost automatic, but they can require them to receive training and counseling, prior to giving permission.  That can take days or even weeks.

I have never been a military wife. So, please do not get in too much of a hurry and just show up, but the more information you gather, the smarter the decision you will make.

My understanding, and this may be wrong, ( to maximize payments from the navy ) the sailor must get a liberty or leave to go back home and move himself and his spouse as part of his moving his household from place of enlistment to his first base.  But that may be wrong, in whole, or in part.

Enjoy the adventure.  You are only  young once :)

As I mentioned previously, married  housing at Goose Creek was plentiful ( as in more than they needed for married personnel - and they were offering it to singles who are forced to move out of the Barracks when they transfer to the prototype command at Goose Creek), but that was a year ago now, so things may have changed.

What I did not mention was what a superior option Goose Creek married housing  is to living off base.

Married base housing at Goose Creek ( actually PPV housing not technically Navy owned ), at least where my son lived, was right down the road from both the NNPTC campus ( A-School and Power School ) and a little further down the same road from prototype.

The housing was also outside the secure gates - so visitors did not have to go through security, but still on base so it was patrolled by Ari Force Police.

The off base housing ( Civilian owned and managed - not PPV )  - near the base is lower end ( think bed bugs ) and in more of high crime areas - there are very nice off base areas further from base - but it takes longer to commute to A-school and Power School and even longer to prototype.

The address my son formerly lived at was

if you want to Google map it...
you can get directions from the house to NNPTC ( for A-School and Power School )
or directions from the house to NNPTU ( for prototype )
Google maps is so cool :)  - at least it is for us "old folks"
The PPV housing also covers all utilities in the rent and must accept what the Sailor receives as BAH for rent ( as I understood how it worked ).
Of course the Sailor must actually receive BAH and he must pay rent by payroll deduction.
Any way it is a great deal for married Sailors given the other options for housing, and the distance and the condition of off base housing.
Hope this helps answer some of the questions.

There have been a number  of questions about what wives can do related to Housing at Goose Creek while their Nuke-to-Be Husband is still in Boot Camp - or at Goose Creek and unable to initiate the process yet for any reason.

This may, or may not, help.

Here is the official Video the Navy put up on Youtube regarding the Heat Link,

But the Other Links on the Official Navy "links to housing related information" were also useful.

Dor, I am still in awe that your son is on the Carter.

The stories my son told about guys who wanted to be considered, and could not even get an interview make it sound pretty exclusive.

At the moment the weather is great here in Washington ( even on the west side ), not sure when you are coming, or if you are already here, but now would be a great time,

Gulf Coast Mom, great information about your son receiving e-mails on a sub every week, but not being able to send as e-mail home so often.

Sounds like those moms who are newbies to subs, like me, should plan on sending an e-mail at least once a week.

Is the feed back you get from the Sailor Mail reliable as to when they actually forward the e-mails to the sub, or are there so many factors involved you can not really tell ?

Comment by NF Mom on May 3, 2013 at 4:31pm

Congratulations Leenna, from the mom of an ET Nuke who just started his first submarine deployment after graduating the Nuke Training Pipeline.

Very happy for you Gulf Coast Mom!  So glad you wrote to him.  I know that meant a lot to him.

Gulf Coast Mom, how great to finally hear from your son, and to find out he received your weekly messages!

My son will be serving on a sub before long. We also have weekly phone calls (and texts, when necessary), and I'm so not looking forward to losing that.
