Well it seems sequestration might effect the forward deploying SSGNs. In order to cut costs they want to extend the deployments from 3 months to 6 months so they don't have to fly the crews back and forth so much. Budget cuts! Has anyone else heard about this?

momofsix- the length of A school depends on what rate your daughter is given during bootcamp.  if she gets MM (not very many girls do get this one), their A school is 14 weeks.  If she gets EM or ET, their A school is 24 weeks.  They do observe national holidays, such as 4th of July, Memorial Day, etc., and they do have weekends off, but end up spending a good part of Sundays studying in order to get their mandatory study hours for the week completed.  Saturdays are good days for laundry, and maybe just relaxing a little, maybe getting off base.  Hate to say it, but you are going to have to wait a little and see what happens, and which rate she gets.

Welcome momofsix!  Look up top in the discussion forum - "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC".  That has lots of wonderful information that will help you out....and there are plenty of "veteran" moms and dads on here that can provide all kinds of valuable info.

my daughter is going to A school soon. she actually has her PIR 04/19. my question is, do they go to school for 6 months straight or do they get any kind of leave and if so, for how long. i'm sure we will find all of this out when she gets there, but i'm the kind that likes to plan ahead!!! just wondering about holidays like the 4th of July----the way i figure it, this is right in the middle of her A school. help??

My son has "A" school grad on 4/19.  We just booked our flights today - went back and forth trying to decide whether or not to go (son says "A" school grad isn't a big deal) but hubby decided that the weather will be nice then so it's a good time to visit!  I hope so!  Looking forward to seeing Charleston (and of course our son too!).

Welcome Sunshine66!

Navymombrokenandsad - praying that everything works out well for your son.

NCnarrator - nice that your son passed his PT and got to phase up - happy your were able to visit with him!

ktrsb - yay on your son's grad and so nice you have him home for 10 days!

Congrats to all who had Power School Grad on Friday! Keep up the good work!

Well, just got home from Charleston after a whirlwind tour - flew up Th night, had a late dinner with my sailor (no curfew) and his brother, then early morning at NNPTC for graduation (long line of traffic, and we were 40 mins early!), then a moving ceremony (they let family get right up to the podium and yell!), then dinner at Anson's, then an early flight home to SAT.  Pshew!  We're beat but happy, and have him home for 10 days.  Now he's with his three best friends from since 6th grade. Happy, happy, happy.

I hope he does. He's going into it with a good attitude and is excited to be there. Btw, for some reason my picture has changed to that belonging to FTLW...it's not my picture, lol. Not sure how to fix it.

Sunshine66 -- Welcome to the Nuke group.   I hope  your Sailor love GC as much as mine does.  It's been one of the best decision he's made.  At least it seems so right now.  I hope it continues to go so well.

Navymombrokenandsad we talked to my son today and mentioned what had happened and he said that if you son hasn't been in trouble there is a strong liklihood that he won't be kicked out of the program.  My son said that they post the Captain's Mast cases and the punishments as a threat to everyone else and that unless your son was very early in the program or had been in a lot of trouble that he most likely would be okay.   I hope he was right.   Even though it was a bad decision...young men make a lot of impulsive decisions as do young women and I would hate for it to ruin his career. It would be better if it changed the direction of his life in a very positive way and that he could make a difference in the life of Americans by serving his full enlistment doing what he's been trained to do.  Praying for a good outcome for you.
