I believe they are met at the airport and transferred to base.  It's only about a 15-20 minute drive.

The way it generally works with travel like that is they will be reimbursed the cost of a one-way ticket from Chicago to Charleston, since that is the necessary travel as far as the Navy is concerned.  Anything above that is on the sailor's dime.

pietschie - my son is also graduating boot camp on 12/21! He too is coming home with us (back to Ca.) and then flying back to Goose Creek on the 28th.  We bought his ticket from Chicago to Cali and then another ticket from Ca. to Goose Creek.  I was told on another site that he will get reimbursed for all (or part) of his ticket back to Goose Creek.  They will need to submit some paperwork and then I guess it could take some time, but hey it's worth it to get some of the money back!  Are you going to Sarge's Meet N Greet? If so we can meet there :)

I remember reading the recruit website last year at this time, preparing for my sailor to leave for boot camp.  The sailors that graduated right before Christmas and New Year got to go home for Christmas.  I suppose because of the stand down.  Really not sure, but it was just the two classes.  I am sure that is the same this year.

When my son graduated from A-school, we didn't get to go.  I will say that my son said it was REALLY short (maybe 30 minutes).  Only a few parents were there.  Our next graduation is Power School in May.  We are planning to attend that one.

Comment by Kat (MM Nuke) on December 5, 2012 at 11:49am

kfguay - A school graduation is held inside the Rickover building, where their classrooms are.  I didn't go to my son's, but I've heard it's fairly short and intimate.  Nothing like PIR, or like Power School, mostly because there are so few who graduate at one time from A school.  They usually graduate just a couple of classes at a time, so could be anywhere from 30-90 people maybe.  Power School grad. is more like 350-400 at a time,

Comment by Kat (MM Nuke) on December 5, 2012 at 11:45am

He probably gets to come home then because the Nuke school is on a two week stand down over the holidays, so they probably wouldn't have anything for them to do if they arrive right before Christmas. When he gets there on the 29th he will most likely get checked into his room, then have the next week of sitting around, or doing small tasks around base.  When my son's best friend, not a nuke, graduated from BC 3 years ago, he also got to come home for Christmas then report to his linguistics school after the stand down.

Comment by pietschie on December 5, 2012 at 10:50am

i was surprised that he gets to come home, but he said it was his choice, he had 10 days and he could use them.. maybe because it fell on christmas, idk.. maybe cause he is very young,he turned 18 during bootcamp.. not sure but i am happy!!
