beans7469 - My son Nick is driving home to NJ.  He is traveling with another Nuke who lives in Maryland.  He is in Class 1206-11. They are sharing the cost.  It makes me feel better that he is not driving all that distance alone.  I think it would be great to have another join them.   The more the Merrier!

navynrocks, I know of a Mom who's did not pass the Comp at PS.  She too had flown all the way over from OR to be bitterly disappointed that she was not watching her son graduate.  (Her son and mine shared the same PIR)  She was grateful to have him for a few hours during the day, and he was able to come to PS graduation, and she was there too, congratulating the others.  Her son went on mandatory study time, retook the test on Thursday and passed.  He is now a Qualified Nuclear Operator having just passed Prototype oral boards.  Yes, he did not get to graduate with his PS class, and yes the weekend plans in GA were ruined, but in the big picture he has persevered and finished nuke school.  I will be thinking and praying for your sailor that he too will pass and move on to Prototype.  hugs>>

Just a clarification- The Stennis took the Nimitz's deployment. They needed extra time to get their qualifications done, so we went out early instead of them leaving when they were supposed to. A few days before they left, our one roommate did come home and inform us that something in the Reagan broke and was going to take extra time to finish. So if we have to stay out later than 8 months, I'm told that's the Reagan's fault. But who wants to place blame when their husband is forced back out to sea 4 months earlier than planned, right? (I do place the majority of the blame on Iran). :)

Yes, the Stennis received the Christmas project last year. This year I believe it's going to the Ike. However, the Stennis families are organizing something for ourselves so everyone gets a goody bag.

As far as no one sending halfway boxes to other sailors on subs- The halfway boxes are organized by the FRG. And Mary is right, they are to be on board before the sub leaves. All of the wives do their husband's boxes (and include family if family wants to put in a card or something), but these boxes are not large. Size of a shoebox is the biggest they're allowed to send. If the sailor is single, most FRG's I believe have a program where they make boxes for those guys that the family (mom, dad, aunts, uncles, siblings) cannot make.

Subs are lucky to get two or three mail drops a deployment (at least on Boomers) - sidenote, the Stennis has taken on mail weekly the past month - and even then they're limited to one galloon ziplock bag of cards/stuff per sailor. So it's not really possible for the general public to volunteer to send stuff.

That being said, my mom and I did do a project where our local elementary school brought in all sorts of candy and goodies and we sent it to the FRG to be put in boxes for those single sailors who weren't going to have a box. We got TONS of stuff and then sent it to the FRG to organize. There are ways to volunteer, but with the information being more classified and room being a lot tigheter, it's much harder to do.

oh navynrocks, my heart breaks for you. What a disappointment and I think if it was me I would be saying the same things. At least you got to see your son, hold him in your arms and be with him when he needed you in his own disappointment. In that respect, the time and money was not a waste. Try to make this time with him not entirely down, try to enjoy being together. This is one horrible incident, not the rest of his life. Being with family is the most important thing. Hugs to you all.

I appreciate your words ,Kayinaz & yes my son is "dealing" and regardless we know he is a bright ,honorable young man, he delayed his entry into the Navy for me as i have breast Cancer and he took care of me all thru the surgeries, In my eyes there is nothing more honorable.

What Is not fair is Having this Test taken 2 days before there graduation when People have Time and money invested!  Nothing to do with rules or circumstances, that i can understand,  Bottom line is everyone is screwed including your sailor b/c Navy chooses not to reorganize there system where as it doesnt cause folks to loose there investments for this endeavor.

Comment by kayinaz on November 9, 2012 at 11:30am

Navynrocks- I feel so bad for you and your son right now.  I try to explain to my son that sometimes in life you do everything right and work your hardest and do your best and still something falls apart and it goes bad and it always sucks when that happens. All your son can do is you pick himself up, put a smile on his face and keep moving forward - primarily because that's all you can do in a situation like that and that's a characteristic of a strong man. As long as he can hold his head high and be proud of what he has done and the effort he made he will have no regrets.  We all make mistakes at times.  As far as the Navy regulations - I can understand your frustration.  The thing is that there are no exceptions.  They don't pick and chose who they let slide and who has to follow the rules.  The rules are for everyone and sometimes it doesn't seem fair when there are extenuating circumstances.   It sounds like your son is going to be a great sailor and will "work it out".  Sounds to me like you have a very strong young man you can be proud of.  He is handling this diversity with calmness and clarity.  I'm sure his shipmates will rally around him. Remember - the Navy is not the organization or the rules or the ships.  The Navy is the young men and women who do their best every day to make it happen, keep it fair and the same for everyone and keep America strong and safe.  I'm sorry this has turned out so badly for you.
