Mary, I am drooling on my laptop! Candied nuts sell for big big bucks at the farmers' market near us, so this homemade version is the way to go. Great idea for sailor grub.

My son graduated power school last summer, with distinction.  He was married and his wife was pregnant.  He requested to stay in GS but was sent to BS; so I think the reeds of the  Navy (and where there is a vacancy) is the deciding factor.  He has really liked NY and is getting ready to graduate from ELT - his final board is 7/16.  Then he's going to Norfolk - Montpelier.  I'm so jazzed because Norfolk is 90 minutes from my house and I can see my new grandson on a regular basis!

tkmec5- I've sent puppy chow plenty of times down to GC and while not all the pieces may be whole, it's still edible. :) Aaron always loved when I sent that stuff! I even sent it out to Washington for his Birthday last month and it was still in tact.

No need to take a trip to walmart and then pay for shipping.  Most items I found can either be shipped from their distribution center or just shipped to the GC or BS Walmart for pick up.  OR Walgreens has free shipping up to $25.00 and not much after that either.

tkmec 5 - Chex mix makes a "mud buddies" (I think that is it) that is their version of puppy chow. It is not quite as good as the home made, but pretty darn good.  I had trouble finding it, but recently our WalMart has been carrying it. I would think it would ship well. I feel a trip to Walmart coming soon!

I have been sending lots of carrot bread.  I wrap it in foil, place it in a freezer bag and ship in a sturdy box.  Because of the heat, I have been sending it frozen.  It gets to GC in great shape.

We send cookies to our son in ziplock freezer bags.  These are airtight there is no way ants can get in.

We use priority mail for shipping and use the Regional Box B 12" x 10 1/4" x 5"  which is a flat rate box you can only get online and buy the postage online.  It is much cheaper than the post office.   Tape all the seams of the box with packing tape.  No ants have ever gotten  inside a carton that I packed, much less inside the bags.

tkmec5, a good way to ship cookies is in a pringles can. No point in sending goodies in Rubbermaid containers etc. as the sailors have no place to store the stuff, so disposable is the way to go.  Be sure to tape all lids to keep ants from getting in ... when my son was in GC, he said ants got into sealed packages and were even inside unopened PopTart and granola bar boxes (note to the military: ants .. the new secret weapon!!).
