Here is my source for the clearance issue, uffda6.  The answer in the forum was to someone discharged with an asthma problem in boot camp, but it still is an ELS, with an RE-4 reenlistment code, the same discharge and code that they are talking about with your son.  If it's personal, it isn't reflected in the nature of his discharge.  The RE-4 code is normal for an ELS - it's not intended to be punitive, it just reflects a judgment (required to be backed up with evidence) that he'd be better off out of the military.  To clear up the clearance issue; he will lose the clearance he currently has, but simply because he will no longer be in a position that requires a clearance.  But, if he should apply for a job in the future, either with the federal government, or for a contractor requiring a clearance - this discharge will have no effect on it.  The only way they could be tougher than that on your son, would involve giving him a different kind (other than ELS) of discharge - so as long as it's an ELS, it could be a lot worse.

Sincerely - best of luck to you and your son...

Lenoranh Thank you for the heads up about legal advice. it was the first thing my son did when he was pulled from class and told he was going to Captain's mast, however legal just walked him through the process I am assuming my son was not clear in saying he needed a lawyer. I have advised him to appeal the decision and to get a lawyer for this.

Thank you all for your prayers and your support. It is true that our Nukes are brilliant young men and women, and it isn't always all about the brain, but sometimes common sense comes in to play. My son is not a slackered, but I can understand your son's point of view Bunker QB. I am taking all of your opinions as that I am not offended by anyone's opinion. It is so hard to try and deal with from a distances and as a mom I would love to just swoop in and make it all better, but only my son can work toward that end. He knows I trust him and have faith in him, and it may very well be that the Nuke job isn't for him, and his brain could be used elsewhere. The all branches of the military courted my son for a year after he ranked in the 99th percentile on his ASVAB's. My son thought long and hard about where he wanted to be. His father and grandfather were both Navy and my son followed. If this was not meant to be then so be it I would never consider my son a failure, I only believe you are a failure if you sit still and never try.

Mark as for the ELS and it not effecting his security clearance, evidently the person in charge of his Captains Mast, who was not a Captain, said he was going to code my sons separation so that he will never get any kind of clearance nor would he ever be able to enlist in any other military position this whole thing seems like a very personal attack for what has been described and read to me. There is so much that is wrong about this whole thing. from being double scheduled to being phased up and then being separated that I am still totally stunned and so is my son. I have told him to get a lawyer he really needs one.

I really did not want to start any problems within this sight, I just thought someone would have some insight, and several of you have offered your support and prayers for that I am very thankful. We do seem to become family here and I appreciate all of your help.

I spoke with my son tonight. He sounds good. He is in class 1237MT. Anyone else have a sailor in this class? Would love to hear from you.

Yes, my son did tell me that the cooks are really from Goodwill and have no Navy affiliation.  I have asked him about the food.  I got the impression that it is not tasty.  He has also said that at times he is not sure what he is eating.  :(   When I reminded him that the purpose of food is to nurish the body, he replied by saying "let's go with that.  I am hoping that it nurished my body."

Comment by Anna V on July 1, 2012 at 11:35pm
Our son hasn't complained too much about the food... But in a southern state you would think we'd have some good southern cooks - at least that makes sense to me.

I am now sharing really great news:  my son is a Daddy and I am a grandmom for the first time; and he graduates from ELT on 7/20.  So much to be proud of!

My son has seen a couple guys in his group go through captain's mast; the latest was a guy who fudged his physical; apparently lying on an official document (even one attesting to your physical fitness) is a big deal and has to do with the issue of integrity.  I think the feeling is that, if you can lie on something this trivial, what happens when you're in the fleet and you make a mistake?  There's not a lot of room for error in nukes.

Comment by MN Mom of MM on July 1, 2012 at 10:12pm

Bunker, I too would take note when I'd see a post from you.  I have copied for future reference some of the things you have shared from your and your sons perspective.  PLEASE don't leave this group.  We are a family,  and need each other.  I some times have been taken back by a post too, I remember the one about 'prefill' and thought...Oh wow, that was kinda harsh...then I think about how our sailors have been thrown together with so many different people and need to work things out to live together.  I for one want to be the best support for my kid and all of you guys are helping me do that.  So stick with us BQB.

I do also perk up and take note when I see a post from Mark or Willaim.
